TRINITY CHURCH, LAWRENCE.
A special meeting of the ve9try waa held on Monday evening, Archdeacon Beaumont being in the chair. The subscription lists in response to Mr E. Herbert's generous oiler to subsidise pound for pound amounts collected in liquidation of the church debt were handed in, and showed that £190 7s had been collected, which amount, together with the subsidy, entirely cleared off the debt, £380 14s, The church, school, and parsonage are now out of debt. The Chairman, on behalf of the vestry, expressed the great satisfaction felt at this very happy state of affairs and their grateful sense of Mr Herbert's most generous gift, and of tbe loyal generous response of the parishioners to the appeal made to them, and confidently hoped that for the future tho church would not again be subject to any debt. It was proposed by Mr John Thompson, seconded by Dr Withers, aud carried unanimously — "That this veatry desire to place on record their hearty appreciation of the very liberal manner in which Mr E. Herbert, churchwarden, had come forward and enabled the vestry to clear off the long-standing debt on the churcb."
Mr Hebbeht, in returning thanks, said the result gave him as much pleasure as it afforded any member of tho veatry, and that a pleasing feature to him was the large number of contributors, showing plainly, as it did, the wide interest taken, in church matters throughout the parish.
The order of discharge of Williams and Colville, engineers in a small way at Tirnaru, has been suspended for six months by Judge Ward because they continued to obtain credit after giving an unregistered bill of sale over their atock-ip-trade. His Honor said if this waa not fraud, it looked very like it.
