EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.

Tho attendance returns for the quarter ended the 30bh of Jane, which have been compiled by the Otago Education Board, show that there were 195 schools in operation in the district during the period, employing 247 male and 258 female teachers, besides 13 teachers of sewing. The number of pupils on the sohool rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 22,614, and at the end of the quarter 22,603, consisting of 11,723 boys and 10,880 girl?. The average attendance for the quarter was 9837 boys and 9063 girls, making a total of 18,900; being 687 less than tho average for tbe previous quarter, and 110 less than that for the corresponding quarter of 1890. The infantile disorders which have been prevalent of late throughout the district have affected the attendance more disastrously than did tho la grippe visitation of last year. The attendance is now lower than it has been since September 1888.

The average attendance at the city and suburban schools were: — George street, 723; Albany street, 689 ; Normal, 671 ; High street, 646; Kaikorat, 641 ; Arthur street, 593 ; Caversham, 593; Union street, 528 ; Macaudrew rosd, 506 ; MorniDgfcon, 503 ; Norfch-Easfe Valley, 418 ; Forbury, 405 ; Kensington, 349); Ravensbourne, 206. The attendance at Oaraaru were : Middle School, 448 ; South, 446 ; North, 396. At tbe district high schools: Port Chalmers, 536; Tokomairiro, 307; Palmerston, 276; Lawrence, 254.

The Rev. Mr Martin is reported to have accepted the eurateship of the Anglican Church at Gladstone, near Invercargill.
