Country Impbovbmkht* CoMiN<K»Though lome milet distant from Gore, Improvement in road and railways in Southland will always tell towards making Gore more of a centre for the coming county of Mataura— a certainty within two or threejyeart. Mr Ihomae Mackenzie, M.H.R., ii now well on the scent of the lo»t £20,000 which was allocated for extension of the Waikaia line, and it ia quite on the cards that the year 1893 will see the line extended to the new township, which the sohool commissioner* have well named •• Wai-pvu (troubled waters), a great improvement on " Muddy Oreek," the present ungraceful name of the place. Another coming country improvement is the construction of a good road from the Elbow to Te Anau and Manapouri. The present Government is pretty sure to put a good round sum down for opening up these lakes, so as to encourage railway traffic, and when that is done Gore will certainly feel the benefit, distant though it may now seem. Thk Bibohwood Hounds.— This paok is to be brought up to Wantwood next Friday, and there wlll|be a drag on Saturday and Monday. At the paok will remain at Wantwood for a week no doubt another run or two will be arranged for. Thi Book Fiexd.— About a dozen subioribers to the "Picturesque Atlas" met at White's Hotel on Wednesday afternoon, and after talking things over for an hour appointed a committee to meet the book fiends when they came and endeavour te come to some arrangement. On Friday the fiends appeared and delivered, or attempted to deliver, their books. In one case the first fiend was oast out In truly scriptural fathfon.fand landed in the muddy street, with plentiful use of words sounding like exoroisrat. Finally a treaty was concluded betwixt man and fiend. The nearest pub. was patronised, 30 viotims turned up, and the two tormenting fiends. Beaulfc, subscribers to pay £3 down and the balanoe by Instalments until the end of tbia jear. Moral: If you want a book go and buy it or order it ftom a resident bookseller ; if you don't want a book, or anything else, very badly don't buy it, even if you have cash to spare, and never deal with travelling touts of any description whatever.
