THE DUNEDIN HOUNDS.
The run on Saturday was at Wakari, over the properties of the Messrs Shaw and Mrs Murphy. The neighbourhood is a pleasant one and the outing enjoyable, although from the cramped natnre of the fences the country is not a good one from a hunting point of vie ". The attendance, considering the lovely afternoon, was hardly up to the average, but those present seemed to thoroughly enjoy the pure atmosphere and the exhilaration of the sport. Amongst those waiting for the throw off were Mr Jowitt (on Fotens), Dr Closs (Hero), Mr George Stephenßon (Donald), Mr Duncan (Cocky), Colonel Sinclair (Gipsy), and Mr Hart (Post and Bails). Mr Fetre, owing to the non-arrival of his horse, was compelled, although in hunting costume, to take stook of the proceedings from a drag piloted by Mr Taggart, which contained about a dozen other gentlemen. I had nearly omitted Mr Wright on Erebus, and a stranger on a very clever looking clipped brown. Three or four ladies were present on horseback, including Mrs Walcot on a chestnut, but the only representative lady follower was Miss Taggart, on Robin Hood. The jumps were a stone wall (which had to be twice crossed), two doubles, and a succession of low post and raila through two grass paddocks — not at all a stiff run, but sufficieat to test the cleverness of the horses and the nerves of the riders. The hounds, well handled by J. Poole (on Pioneer) and J. Allen (Trimolite), gave few opportunities for breathing time, and some gave a sigh of relief on pulling up safe after two sharp runs, during which I did not see an empty saddle. Dr Closs has the makings of a clever horse in Hero, and he rode him very pluokity. The stranger on the brown was always handy, and so was Miss Taggart on Robin. Nimbod.
