GORE.

June 3.— lt is announced that Messrs Brewer and Trembath have bought from Mr Thomas Green the horse-sale part of his business, and that Mr Brewer will act as auctioneer as soon as his license is obtained. Mr Green, of course, goes on with bis stook-selltng and land agency business just the same as before.

Licensing. — Tbe annual licensing meeting was held here yesterday. Present : Messrs Alfred Dolamore (in the chair), Woodyatt, Brewer, Hagen. and Hewitt. The police report was favourable as to every house in the district. Mr Dolamore said that some members of the committee had noticed a certain amount of Sunday trading going on, and the police should take notice of it. Also that there was a good deal of loitering and sitting oa benches in front of some hotels on Sundays. The only show of opposition to any license was that T. O. White objected to a license being granted to his brother Fred White for the Bailway Hotel, on the ground that the applicant was of bad fame and oharaoter, and that immorality was permitted on the premises. Mr Wm. Henderson, solioltor, appeared for Fred White, and argued that the objection made was not as provided by the schedule of the act, and the committee upheld Mr Henderson's contention and granted the license, T. O. White remarking that he should take the matter to a higher court The chairman pointed out that there were not enough signatures to the objection lodged. Mild Treatment.— Thomas Atkinson was oharged at the Police Court last Tuesday with drunkenness and assaulting T»8. Sootfrby striking him with his clenched flit. It appeared that the accuied tried to get into the Town Hall skating rink, but Mr Scott, who was in charge of the door, refused to let him in, as he was not in a fit state to be admitted. The accused was, however, not too drunk to go outside and lay in wait for Mr Scott till the rink dosed, and then; without any provocation whatever, deliberately knock down Scott with a blow on the face. Aooused had confederates with him, so that any resistance by his victim would have been certainly worse than useless. Accused was merely convicted and discharged on the information for drunkenness , and fined £3, or 48 hours' imprisonment In default of payment of the fine, on the charge of tbe assault. The fine was Immediately paid. The justices sitting were Meisrs James Beat tie and Alfred Dolamore. One of accused's mates, Finlay M'lntyre, was only fined 10s, or 24 hours, for endeavouring to rescue Atkinson from the police.
