THE CENSUS.

Wellington, May 30. The census returns of the Maori population are all in. The figures, subject to revision, are: — North Island ... ... 30,452 South Island ... ... 1,860 Total ... ... 41.312 The census returns for 1886 were 41,432, so that the quinquennial census just taken shows a decrease of 120.

The population of the Branner on the night the census was taken was 2256, there being 1194 males and 1062 females. It is computed by a reliable authority that Branner has lost fully 400 by the strike. Those who have replaced the old hands have not brought their families with them, and at present there are not nearly so many men in the place. A year or so ago there was not an empty house in the district, and numbers had two families in them, while now you could get fully 100 unoconpied houses.

The Waimate Times has been informed that over 20 residents in the Waibao district have not been inolnded in the recent census return?. In some oases the census papers were left and have never been called for since they were filled up ; and in others no census enumerator had been near the place. This is attributed to the subenumerators who were appointed being unacquainted with the district. If other districts show a similar state of affairs, there will be no difficulty in accounting for the missing 8000 of the population which the Registrargeneral says he cannot account.
