The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat ;f or the United Kingdom is 2,572,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1,020,000 quarters. The English wheat market has an upward tendency, and the Continental is firmer ; but the American is declining. Bank of New Zealand shares (new issue),

The Financial News states that the firm of Messrs Cristobal, De Murrieta, and Co., South American and Spanish merchants, of Old Broad street, has been converted into a joint stock company, with a capital of two millions and a million of debentures.

At Cork to-day Mr Parnell addressed a meeting which was attended by over 50,000 people, and he was received with great enthusiasm. At a banquet held by those who have seceded from Mr Parnell's leadership, Mr Justin M'Carthy presided. Cardinal Manning wrote to the chairman expressing his agreement with the action taken by the Irish bishops relative to affairs in Ireland. The judges described the husband's conduct towards his wife as cruel and brutal.

New Zealand long berried wheat, 42s (active). For New Zealand wheat on passage sellers are asking 395, but buyers will not give more than 38s 6d. Canterbury mutton, 4|d ; Wellington do, 4§d; Canterbury lamb, 6fd. Beef—forequarters 3s 9-16 d, hindquarters 4£d. Hemp : Wellington, fair quality, £23 15s ; good, £24 15s. South Australian wheat, 43s (market restricted) ;' Victorian do, 42s (quiet).

For New Zealand wheat off coast sellers are asking 425, but buyers will not give more than 41s 6d.

The university boat race between Oxford and Cambridge eights was rowed over the usual course on the Thames to-day, and resulted in a victory for Oxford ,by a quarter of a length. The Cambridge led at the start, but were speedily overtaken "by Oxford, and the boats were on even terms on passing under Hammersmith bridge. Here Cambridge again assumed the lead, and was a quarter of a length to the good at Thorn ycroft's. For the remainder of the course Oxford gradually reduced the advantage, and with a final spurt passed the judges boat a quarter of a length ahead in 21min 48sec. The race was the grandest seen for years, and throughout it there never was a clear length between the boats.

At the conference of the Miners' Federation it was resolved to prosecute the Eight Hours Bill apart from the Labour Commission.

Mr Parnell is not likely to resign his seat for Cork, but the seceders are making preparations for a fight.

The Parnellite press seek to excuse the necessity of Parnell's resigning his seat for Cork by alleging that Healy's response is offensive.

Lord Kcutsford has introduced a bill to enable the Imperial Government to secure a modus vivendi with regard to the Newfoundland fisheries. Despite the refusal of the local Governmen to consent to arbitration or to give legal effect to the award of the arbitrators; the measure was read' a first time to-day. This mode of coercion is causing some excitement in the colony.

The bill introduced by Lord Knutsford gives naval officers supreme authority over property along the coast and adjacent waters. The people of the colony are said to be furious afc what they consider to be the treaohery of the Home authorities.

March 21.

The Parliament of Newfoundland has forwarded a petition to the House of Commons praying that action respecting arbitration in the fisheries dispute be delayed until such time as will give the local Parliament an opportunity of expressing its views on the subject. The Opposition appear inclined to support Sir J. Pope Hennessy's motion protesting against the action " taken by the Imperial Parliament.

Mr H. M. Stanley proposes to make an extended lecturing tour in Australia, and sails for the colonies in October next. The first series will be delivered in Melbourne.

The election for the vacancy for As ton Manor, caused by the death of Mr G. Kynoch, took place to-day. Mr Hutchinson, the Conservative candidate, was returned, polling 5310 against 2332 by Mr Beale, Home Rule nominee,

[At the general election Mr Kynoch polled 3495 votes, while Mr Reid (the Gladstonite) polled 2713.]

It is considered that ex-King Milan, of Servia, has developed symptoms of insanity, M. Garasohanini, who was accused by Milan,

of complicity in the murder of two women, has challenged his accuser to fight a duel. The United States Government threaten 'to impose a tax on German sugar unless the German Government agrees to a modification of the duty on American pork. Perrin, a Detroit millionaire, has been kidnapped. A ransom of 30,000dolis demanded for his release.

March 22.

Tallow : Medium beef, 25s 6d. Since the close of the -wool sales the market has been quiet. The arrivals up to date total 200.C00 bales, of which 54,000 bales have been sent forward.

The wheat market is quieter, but prices are being maintained. Australian supplies are short.

Hides (salted) : Heavy ox, 3§d ; do cow, 3|d. The second trial of the torpedo gunboat Karrakatta, destined for Australia, was a greater failure than the first, and she has been ordered to undergo a thorough overhaul.

The Times' special message from Santiago says that the President of Chili is in difficulties, and that the critical moment of the struggle has arrived. The United States Government have submitted the terms of treaty with Hawaii, which provides for absolute freetrade between the two countries. The Queen, of Hawaii thinks her Government must reject the treaty unless the bounty on Hawaiian sugar is allowed. Mr J. G. Blame, Secretary of State, believes that the Queen of Hawaii is anxious to cultivate reciprocal relations with Great Britain. New STork, March 21. At the first meeting convened in this city by Mr Parnell's delegates, over 4000dol was collected in aid of the National League. Berlin, March .20. The National Liberal party have declared for Prince Bismarck. The German expedition up the Benne river, West Africa, has returned to the Oameroons, having lost 100 men. March 22 A rumour is afloat of a scandal in political circles. It is reported that the Emperor allowed Herr Yon Boetticher, Secretary of State for the Interior, to draw £17,000 from the Guelph fund to relieve himself from financial difficulties. March 23. The Emperor's animosity towards Prince Bismarck is increasing, and he avoids the Friederichsruhe route when visiting Kiel. The German corvette Oarola has returned after a cruise of five years abroad, principally on the China station. Her officers were accorded a hearty welcome on their return. It is now asserted that it was the late Emperor William, the grandfather of the present Emperor, who assisted Herr Yon Boetticher out of his financial difficulties, and that the money was taken out of the privy purse, and not from the Guelph fund. St. John's, March 22. The Parliament of Newfoundland intends to send delegates to London to uphold the cause of the" colony. At the present juncture a series of mass meetings is being arranged to protest against the action of the Imperial Government. There is now a prospect of Newfoundland passing an act to enforce a modus vivendi with regard to the French treaties. March 23. Members of the Newfoundland Assembly openly express themselves in favour of separation, and it is thought that any attempt at coercion will only result in a universal revolt. Paris, March 23. The European Courts recognise Prince Victor as head of the Napoleonic family. Rome, March 20. Prince Napoleon's will appoints Prince Louis to the succession of the Bonaparte Party, and excludes Prince Victor. The Bonapartists, however, recognise Prince -Victor. It is reported at Spezzia, the principal .Italian naval port, that secret orders have .been sent to the Italian Mediterranean squadron in connection with the lynchings at New Orleans. March 22. After a three days' debate the Chamber of Deputies passed a vote of confidence in the Rudini Ministry by 254 to 96.
