WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL,

The ordinary meeting of this county council took place in the County Chambers, Palmerston, on the 18th, at which there' wera present—The Chairman (Mr A. D. Bell), and Crs T. Dent, C. S. Hay, V. Kennedy, T. Muir, A. M'Laren, D. M'Leod, and J. JK Robertson.

DEPUTATIONS

Mr Caldwell appeared in reference to tile distriot road leading past his property, which had been closed by Mr Neill, a neighbour, thereby preventing his cattle from getting to water. — Referred to Crs M'Laren and M'Leod, with power to act at once.

PETITION". A. petition from 39 residents and ratepayers in the vicinity of the upper township, Macraes, was read, setting forth that owing to the long continued drought water for domestic purposes was not available either for residents or the travelling community, and pointing oat the boon the council would Confer by sinking a public well. At present the water flsed for domestic purposes was drawn from a. source where the surroundings were not at all favourable ttf a natural process of purification^ and therefore the water must be in a condition wholly unfit for drinking. — Resolved, on the motion of Cr Hat, seconded by Cr M'Laeen, to subsidise the sinking of a well where mentioned by the petitioners £ for £ to the extent ot £15.

FINANCE.

Accounts for the month amounting to £IS9 ab 9d were passed for pay men b, on the recommendation of the Finance Committee.

INSPECTOBS' BEPOBTS. Green Valley Riding.— About 80 chains of the road opposite Mr D. Muir's homestead required forming. The road had been laid off by Messrs Banks and Allan, 15 chains made, by contract at Davis' hill, and 40 more formed by the surfaceman, a portion of which had been gravelled, and there were still nine chains of what had been formed to gravel. The estimated cost was £175, but less expense would improve it. — The council resolved to form portion between Davis' hill and the next hill, and to call for tenders for the same. Goodwood Riding.— ln this riding the surfaceman had been clearing the culverts from "main road to railway station. The road from main road to Pleasant river required about 300 cubic yards of gravel to crown it, having had nothing done to it for four years, Tbe portion gravelled last summer had settled down, and a good hard road existed up to the village settlement road. On the other end of the Goodwood road, from Wright's 'gate to Sutherland's homestead, required gravelling. Near Anderson's homestead there was a narrow bank, with a deep lagoon under the culvert, which required making up, and about three chains of fencing would make it secure, with three covers and about 100 yds of clay. ' Estimated cost to lengthen culvert and track, was given at £20. — Resolved to call for tenders for gravelling about 15 chains of Goodwood; road and to allow other matters to stand over.'

Bushy Riding. — The road from Allandale colliery to Bushy station was very dusty, and tte crossing at Muddy 1 creek required repairs. At the old Horse Range road the culverts were badly shaken with rabbit burrows, and one had to bejrenewed and the other three repaired. AU had been dope to obtain a proper fall for the water.-r-Received. Blue Mountain Riding.— The main road from Kitcheners bridge to Palmerston was rough, in different, portions, and about 500 yds of 1 fine gravel would improve the worst portions. The estimated cost would be about £25.— The matter to staml over. ■ ,- COBEESPONDENCB. ■

Isbister, Inch Valley, applied, for permission^ to .erect aiawin'ggate across oldioad line 'near Mrs Foden's. ~- Referred to the inspector* A circular, was received from the; Treasury, Wellington, intimating that £Ll9s'6d and £1 16a, goldfields Revenue , -and fine, collected at the Warden's Cfcurti Nenthorn, had been remitted to the. credit of the council at . the Colonial Bank, Palmerston. ■ . Circulars were received from the Charitable Aid requesting information as to the rateable valneof the rateable property in the county for allocation purposes, and forwarding list of persons in the county in receipt of outdoor relief.

The Survey Officer, Dunedin, wrote stating that on receipt of sketch and measurements the area of lsnd deducted re rend deviations would be recorded on the map. — Received.' The Property Tax department, Wellington, notified the council that the sum of £375, being 75 per cent, of subsidy in rates collectable for the year ending March 31, 1891, had been forwarded to the Treasury for payment. — Received!

Mr Fenwick, Taieri Lake Station, wrote | asking to have the old track from Taieri Lake j Station to Deepdell made passable for a trap. — Referred; to the^inspector for a report at next meeting, and the minimum cost of repairs. . The Borough Council of Cromwell wrote aaktnlg the council to contribute the Bum of £2 towards the expenses incurred in the appeal case ' decided' against the borough in the Supreme Court in a conviction obtained against Nicholson for hawking without a license.— Received. The Manager of the Ferpetual Trustees, Estate, and Agency Company, Dunedin, applied, in the event of the council not agreeing to allow Mr Hooter to purchase qqpd line through block VII, Moeraki, to allow him to put up gates on the rosd co as to save him the expense of fencing both sides of the road, agreeing to remove the gates when called upon to do so, or when the road was actually required for public convenienoe. — Application granted, but position of gates to be left to the discretion of the inspector. Mr James Matheson, Falmerston, applied for permission to shift the fence on the Oamaru side of the Limekiln pond to enable him to put up new fence, and to get a better line and foundation. — Referred to the inspector. Mr J. F. M. Fraser, solicitor, Dunedin, wrote, acknowledging a letter conveying the intimation that the county council had appointed Mr Findlsy solicitor to the council, and offering to give any information in his power about past matters. — Received. Mr J. G. Findlay, county solicitor, forwarded opinion re the election of licensing committee for Dunback district, the local option vote of which was held in the month of October, the Triennial Licensing Election Act providing that the election shall take place at the same time as tbe local option vote, — Received. huktbb's eoad. The council reaolved — " That no further action be taken with regard to closing this road. CONTRACTS. The following tenders were opened : — Contract 164 : Supply of gravel, Main road, Green Valley — J. Rendal!, 9£d per yard (accepted) ; W. Pollock, lOd ; T. Hourston, lid ; P. Lunham, Is. Contract 165 : Formation of road, Deepdell to Horse Flat— O. Hoad, £57 10s (accepted) ; W. Dodd, £59 10s; W. Baker, £64 83 6d; G. Cockerill, £69 ; W. Ellison, £76 2s 6d. The council then adjourned. A teaspoonful of salt dissolved in one half glassful of water is excellent to allay nausea in sick headaches.
