LAND AND WATER.

The Dunedin Anniversary Regatta was held in the upper harbour on Monday, the weather being five all day, but somewhat windy. When the first race was started a good breeze was blowing from the south-west, and this steadily increased in violence until the water got pretty rough. One or two very heavy squalls also came on during. the afternoon. The first one occurred shortly before 3 o'clock. The Ladies' Challenge Cup was then about to be started, but as the crews were going down the harbour to take up their positions at the starting post, two of the boats got swamped, and the men had to be picked up by the Onslow and brought back to the wharf. The boats entered for the race were the Cam, Rob Roy, and Lurline, but only the latter weathered the squall. Again at about 5 o'clock, when it was proposed to get off the event just referred to, another equall came on, and it was decided to postpone the race until to-day. The Champion Scullers' Race was likewise postponed owing to the roughness of the water. Two other events on the programme also did not take place. In the Whaleboat Race, for which post entries were to have been received, no entries were forthcoming ; and only one raft pat in an appearance for the Exhibition Life Raft Race, which consequently did not take place. The starting point of the regatta was from a punt which was moored at the Victoria wharf, and in all the e^en f s the finish was made at the same place. Mr J. White was to have acted as starter, but as he was not able to be at his post in the earlier part of the day his duties were performed — and admirably performed — by Captain Nicoll, of the barqne Glenlora. The Eaikorai Band wero in Attendance at the regatta, and played several selections on the wharf at intervals during the afternoon. The regatta must have bsen witnessed by over 1000 persons. Ouly some 600 or 700 of these, however, paid for admission to the Victoria wharf, the others viewing the proceedings from the wharf and dredge near the boat shed. The amount of money taken at the Victoria wharf during the day was £25, but the sum to bo handed over to the Kakanju relief fund from

the proceeds of the regatta will probably be something like £30. The aunual roaJ race of the Dunedin Oycliug Club to Outram and back took place yesterday morning, and oat of nine who entered for ib seven started.^ Owing to the southerly gale that was blowing the pace on the way oat was very Blow, fast pedalling being out of the question and consequently the limit men bad it all their own way. The fastest time for the race was made by Mr G. Crow, who did the distance (33 miles) in 3ar 30min, which, considering the weather, compares very favourably with the record of 3hr 15min. Mr Kingston went out in the fastest time (lhr 47min) and looked like winning, but unfortunately an attack of cramp on the way in spoiled his chance, Mr Grocott, of Oamaru, finished third, but owing to his omitting to read the conditions of the race, he took the shortcut at Lookout Point and loses the third prize. The performances of first and second man are very creditable, as they are both, comparatively speaking, new riders. Mr Ewiog rode a reardriver safety, and Mr Black a " Maori" ordinary, both machines being made by the local maker (Mr Melville). The following is the order in which the competitors were placed, and their time : — R. Ewing (30min start) I—time1 — time for distance, 3b 36min ; D. Black (30min start) 2— time for distance, 3h 41min ; S. Crow (20min start) 3— time for distance, 3h 45min ; G. Crow (scratch) 4 — time for distance, 3h 30min; H. Grocott (15min start) — time for distance, 3h 35min; G. M. Kingston (lOmin start); W. A. Low (15min start).
