THE FLANAGANS' SENTENCE COMMUTED.

At a meeting of the Executive to-day, attended by his Excellency and the Hons. P. Buckley and A. J. Oadtnao, the death sentence on the Flanagans (mother and daughter) for child murder at Chris tchnrch was commuted to imprisonment for life.

The New Zealand Railway Commissioners, a claim of £10 7p» for injnry alleged to have been caused to a numbsr of sheep while intranslt by rail from Edendale to Mosgiel on the 4th November was resurced at the Resident Magistrates Court oa the 12th. Mr golomon appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Haggitt (for Mr Hosking) for the defendants. — Evidence in this partly-heard Case was resumed. — James* Beck, shunter, on the railway at Mosgiel, stated that he was on duty at 6 o'clock on the morning of the sth of November. He passed through the goods' shed and caw Blackie's sheep in the.trucks. He then went on to the station, and saw a special train arrive from Dunedin at a quarter to 7. He was afterwards engaged in shunting, when be saw Mr Blackie taking the sheep out of the trucks. After the.train left, he went to assist Mr Blackie to discharge tbe rest of the sheep. The live sheep were put into the pens, and the dead ones Were allowed to remain in the trucks. Mr Blackie told him that he would take the live cheep away, have breakfast, and come back for the desd ones with a cart,— To Mr Solomon : All tbe live sheep Were out of the trucks before 8 o'clock in the morning.— To the Bench i Daylight came in that morning at 4.40 — This con' eluded the evidence, and his Worship reserved judgment until Friday.
