A Valuable Book.
An ingenious but not too scrupulous Frenchman has contrived to secure a regular income of 3000fr to 4000fr a month by a simple and ingenious proceeding. Wheiever he goes he carries about with him a little volume. •'What book is that?" ever j body asks " you seem very fond of it." "Of course," he replies; "I may tell you that this book is worth more than a hundred thousand francs." ' \ 11 Ha 1 ha 1 Why, you are jesting !■ A little book like that." > "Exactly; and what is more, you would not hesitate yourself for a moment to pay that sum for it." " " Nonsense ; you must be mad." " What'll you bet ? " The figure varies according to the means of the party concerned. The gentleman opens the book and displays lOI.OOOfr notes carefully bound together. And thus he pockets the wager.
