WAITAKI SHEEP DOG TRIAL.

The sixth annual trial came off onThurtday last and proved very successful. There were 61 entries, and betides £57 in prizes and money, there were special prizes, including the President's Cup, valued at £5 ss, for the compbtHor who gained the largest number of pjinta during two years' trials ; Mr T. Evans' gift of trousers and veet, value £2 2s as, a fourth prize in Olais 111, and Mr (j. Haven's bridle, value 355, as a fourth prize in Class 11. The following is a detailed account of the day's sport as reported in the North Otago Times : — Class X. — Hunt-away. About a quarter of a mile. Head, b ing Daok, and yard. Time, 25 minutes. Prizes: £10, £6. £3. Points: Hunt-away, 5; bringing back, 5; jarding, 6. Thirteen entries. William More's Tweed (12 points) ... ... 1 D. Maofarlanfc'B Bob (12 points) ... ... 2 O. Trotter's Ben (9 points) ... ... ... 3 li. Duncan's Glen (9 points) ... ... 4 Mr Robert Duncan's (Hakateramea) Glen was the first dog on the list. He was rather §low in the hunt-away, but did his work fairly well, scoring 4 paints. He brought his sheep home in excellent style (5 points), and had four minutes to yard ; but although well under command he failed to yard. Mr George Hllle'a Tammy did not go. Mr William More's (Hakateramea Downs) Tweed hunted away in good style (4 points), bub brought back far too hurriedly (3 points), and with 13 minutes to spare, yarded in lesa than three minutes, amid oheers. The yarding wai a first-class performance, and was awarded lull points. Tweed took first prize last year in this class with 14 points. Nap (Mr Durward, Kurow station) in the huntaway scored 4 points, doing his work very well, but his sheep scattering, ha was out of ib. This dog waa the prize-taker two years ago. Mr- Robert Stewarb'B (Awakino) Fog lost one of hia sheep in tbe hunt-away, but worked splendidly till he lost the other two at the foot of the hi.l. Recovering them, however, 150 yds beyond the pen, he worked away for a while fruitiest ly (6 points) The next dog. Jack (Mr W. H. Eoss', Hakaterdine-O, coursed his sheep away to the hill in itood stylo, showing all the qualities of a flrst-olass bunt-away (5 points), but he, scattered his sheep and was out of it ; for which the owner was to blame [At this stage - 10 o'clook — the sun shone out through tha haze, and a breeze ■prong up from tbe te», against which the sbeep wanted to go In tbe direotion of Station Peak, and the heat soon fagged dog and sheep ] 1 hree obstinate sheep were let out to Mr Peter Flynn'* (Waibangi) Jack, and be losing bis sheep, failed to score. Mr Maofarlane's Bob had three stubborn sheep to work, and it took him very nearly 20 minutes to hunt them to the flags, He headed, however, in capital style, giving

the she°p plenty of play. Bob brought his sheep down the hill and nlong the flaft in good time, showIng excellent form, but time was called when abont a or.am from tbe pen. Score. 5, 4. o—9 point*. Mr Thos. Dorward's Clyde knew little of his work, and failed to score. Mr O. Trotter's (Waitangi) Bern did his work well ri^ht through to yarding, but railed to yard , although showing fair work. Points— -V-4—o. Mr John MLell.m'a (tfakateramea Valley) Q?en also failed to soore, as he did not put his sheep the distance, and was called off. Mr Robinson's (Hakateramea Valley) Bob lacked speed, but worked his sheep well up to the flags. He failed to head the sheep soon enough, and they went over the top of the npur and Bob lost them. Three points. Mr W. H. Ross' (Sandhurst) Bover failed to nut hit iheep away, and was tne last dog in this class There were three ties -Mr Duncan's Glen" (9), Mr Maofar'.ane's Bob (9), and Mr Trotter's Ben (9)— and it was decided to ran thoir dogs again. Qlen failed to score. Mr Macfarlane's Bub did bis work a seoond time a trifle better than on his first trial, and brought his sheep within the yarding circle. This wbb a splendid performance, and waa awarded full points. Bob, too, showed very good play about the yard, and was awarded 2 points— l 3 points in ail. Mr Trotter's Ben worked very well to tna yard, scoring 9 points, the result being as above. Shepherds' Handicap Baob. Bine entries. Piizos-£3, £1, and 10*.

Porter Haves (USyda), D. M'Kenzle (165 yds), W. Munro (80yds), and R. Duncan (sor) also started. A. A. Cameron (95ydi) did not go. This was * capital race ; the course was about three-quarter* of a mile over rough tussock and matagowrie nnd tip to the top of a steep hill and baok again. Boss and Trotter ran particularly well, and Davidson was a good third. Four of the competitor! gave up on the hill. lime, 4min 2536 c. Glass ll.— Heading, bringing back, and yarding. About quarter of a mile. Time allowed, 15 mm- ' utes. First prize, £10 ; second. £6 ; third, £3. Heading, 3 ; bringing back, 4 ; and yarding, 6. The first dog to try this course was Mr W. Boblnson's Fly. She failed to find the quarry and was called off. Mr D. Maofarlane's Bob was sent and he found them and brought them to the yard canally, but doing good work, failed to yard. Points, 2-4 1. The prize dog ia the first Glass came next, and Mr More sent Tweed off in good style. He made a good head, but lost ground and drovo his sheep a long way out of tbe road, and* failed to recover them. Points— 2. Mr John M'Lellan'a Glen headed well (2 points), and bringing back, lost a aheep. One point— 3 points, Mr John Steven's Wag was a sharp dog ; made a fine oast away and headed well, but lost two of his sheep in a Borubby gully, and was called off. Points— 2. Mr Chas. Leonard's Scott was rather slow in getting on to the quarry, but he headed well (2 points), but getting them into a difficult position he lost time in bringing back (3 points)— s points'. Mr Dnncan's Glen was the next dog. He nurred his heading by oronsing on the sheep and taking the wrong side ; bnt he brought back and was at the yard with his sheep in six minutes of starting, proving himself a good dog. Time was just called when he got a couple of sheep into the 'pen. Points— l—4-2. Mr Thomas Davidson's Yarrow (Station Peak) was somewhat slow In getting on to tbe trail of the quarry. He headed nleo on the wrong side, and brought them to the yard with five minutes to spare. He brought them, however, to the ~ yard rather fast, and one of them fell abont 50 yards from the pen. Points— l— 2— l. Mr Wm. More's Tubs went off to sheep on the top of the ridge standing out against the sky. Immediately the sheep disappeared, and Toss also soon after went over the other side of the ridge. The sheep appeared again in about five minutes with Tosi working well on them, and brought them to the yard in grand style, and was working well when time was called. Points— 2, i, 2—B. Mr Donald Beaton's Scott headed the quarry in five minutes, and was allowed, fultpbiuti"" (2). He had had some dlffloalt^work "coming home, but Scott showed a remarkable command, and brought to the yard with five minutes to spare— 4 points. He yarded in time, and was awarded the full points in all sections— l 3 points. Mr A. M'Millan'a (OtekaHce) Toss headed well (9)," and brought back in capital style, scoring full points (4). He also worked well at tbe y yd, and was awarded 1 point. Mr Alexander Gunn's Tosc went to sheep that went over the ridge, but he headed well, and turned the sheep cut of sight, and bringing baok ! made a good point near the yard, but the sheep sot away, and he lost them. Points, 2 and 4 -6. Mr Fraaer's Lassie took a very wide turn to find tha sbeep, and failed. Mr James Mamies' Bob lost tome time in getting on to tbe sheep, which bad orossed the ridge. He reoovered them, and brought them baok in good style, making a oonple of good turhi on tbe way. He showed good form at the yards, but scattered them ultimately. Points, 2 and 4—6.- Mr J. Dnrward's Birkie failed to icore at all, and Darkle (Mr Robert Duncan's) was the last dog to run In this class, Messrs B. M'Nain, A. Hayes, Donald Beaton, and Thomas Dorward having soratohed their dogs. Darkle headed his sheep In capital style, and brought them down towardt the yard, where they broke, and , one got away. Darkle worked the other two at the yard in good style, but failed to yard. Points, 2, 3. X— 6.

The meeting was concluded on Friday, when Ine following was the result of the contest in Glass III : — D. Beaton's Help 1; B. Stewart's Fog 2; O. Foster's Orib 3. Mr J. Oorward's Nap was awarded tbe first prize and Mr A. M'Milan't Fois tbe second prize for the best bred dogs. Mr Beaton wins the President's Cup, -value £5 ss, for most points during two years' trials, the points being 9.
