an end. He was more than a match for O'Neill, and in everything out-generalled him. Reverses set in against the Irish hero, his reputation waned rapidly, and his army, unable to stand against the English, melted away, and he was forced to seek shelter for a time from ',he conqueror. At last the Spanish reinforcements arrived, under Don Juan, on the 23rd September 1601, but the spirit of the rebellion was broken. Succour came too late. The South would not respond. The North rallied for another effort, and great preparations were made, but only to meet with a complete overthrow in the month of December, near Kinsale.
