HOT WORK AT LAST.
Sir W. Russell was recalled in 1597, and was succeeded by Lord Burgh, a man of vigour and determination; and from this time for five years the whole, country was a scene of war and ruin. The English army met with several reverses, and lost many men. O'Neill became for a time master of Ulster ; and the King of Spain, in conjunction with the Pope, was preparing another Armada against the English. So weary of the struggle did England become that but for her own safety Ireland would have been left to waste itself and become the prey of Spain. The Queen sent over th 6 Earl of Essex with 7000 foot and 1700 horse, but he failed to conquer the rebels. It had beoome indeed a conflict between Catholics and Protestants, carried on upon Irish soil. On both sides many thousands were killed, but more by far fell victims to starvation. Desmond, O'Neill, O'Donnell, and their friends seemed to think t hat one of the ways to set their country at liberty was to plunder its inhabitants, throw dowu" its towns, burn its homesteads, and ruin the fruits and crops of the soil wherever t hey led their armies. Their example was only too closely followed tty the English ; so that the victims of actual engagements were a mere bagatelle compared With those of famine,
