J NEWS GOSSIP, AND ADS. A party of Lawrence sportsmen killed two fine backs during a deer shooting expedition to the Blue Mountains. They report that both fawns and does were numerous, but very few stags were seen. The deer were unusually wild. We have received a copy of the prospectus of the "Australasian Pastoraliets' Review," the monthly paper of which Mr Twopeny has accepted the editorship, and Captain Pearse will be business manager. Mr D. Harris Hastings will be agent for New Zealand. A highly satisfactory account is given in the Board of Trade Journal of the condition of the English labour market. Even in mid-winter, when seasonal causes tended to swell the list of the unemployed, the demand for skilled labour; . remained remarkably good. Out of a total membership of 235,798, in the 21 societies which had made returns,' only 5654 men were reported out of work. ■ -i ( ' A woman sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment at Lyttelton for stealing luggage went about her work in an impudent and open manner. As there was a crush at the 'station, she assisted herself, and was making' her' way towards the Takapuna, when Major Douglas and a clergyman, taking pity on seeing her struggling with, the luggage, assisted her and put the packages on board the steamer without diacoveringthafc they were helping her to make away with their own luggage. Major Douglas failed to recognise his own Gladstone bag. ' The export of coal from Westport last week was 4506 tons. From Greymouth last week the quantity of coil products exported was only 1693 tons. Twelve Chinamen who have accumulated sufficient wealth to enable them to live independently in their native land, left Wellington en route for Hongkong last week. The hospital returns for the past week are : — Remaining from previous week, 85 ; admitted during the week, 16 ; discharged, 21 ; deaths, nil ; total remaining, 80. , At this time of the year many housewives are busy making home-made wines, and by-and-bye . they will be smilingly pressing- their friends to take a glass. "Just one glass ; it cannot hurt you," they will urge, and will assure you that "it is nothing but rhubarb and sugar" .or ."currants and sugar," as the case may be ; but moderate drinkers should beware, foe the fermentation of fruit and sugar generates alcohol, and many, a leg has been unsteady and heads been turned by too great eagerness to oblige our present-day Eves in this respeot. There is more nourishment in a single packet of Keen's Patent Groats than in all the fruit wine that will be made in Dunedin this season. • In the highest military circles in' Berlin it is affirmed that the Czar has discovered fresh faults' of organisations in the Russian army, and ,- the belief is entertained there that the discovery will still further prolong the period during which Russia may be expected to abstain from any steps calculated to provoke a European conflict.
