ATHLETICS.

FIXTURES. j March 19. 189lv—Oamara Amateur Athletic Club's •eoond annual ?ace meeting. NOTES BY SPRINTER. Splendid entries have been received for the Oamaru Athletic Club's sports, which take place on Thursday, the 19th inst., and I anticipate a real good meeting. Tbe handioapper has been very prompt indeed in allotting the bandioaps. They were out on Monday, the 16th hut., and the entries only dosed on Saturday, tbe 14th inst. Taking a tough glanoe through the various eventß, I think tbe following should give a good aocount of themselves :— Maiden (100 yds), Meek ; One Mile Walk, T. Kerr, of Dunedin, should he go up, with Sumpter next best. 120 yds Hurdles— l think Murcott, with 3yds, well in, and I think the next best is Cork, the Bcr&toh man.' 100 yds Handioap Bhould be yon by Muroott also, with I*e .Oren Becond. For the One Mile Flat I prefer F. W. Fish, and if not over exerted be should win the Half-mile also. Putting the Weight should be won by Obaffey, and the 440 yds Flat by A. Murdoch. I think P. Mitchell should (notwithstanding being soratoh) win the two bicycle races. Jack Paiaroa, of Dunedin, should have a Bay in the Long Jump ; but in the 250 yds Handicap the Oamaru people evidently think too mnch of him when they put him on the 2yds mark. I think Menloye should win this. Jaok Fitzgerald should win the High Jump, and as Fish is an old band at eteapleobasing I think his experience should enable him to win. The programme olosea with Throwing the Cricket Ball, and I think Menlove should manage this, The autumn meeting of the Auckland Amateur Athletio and Cycling Club was held on Saturday at the Domain. There was a large nttendance, and the weather was fine. Amongst those present were bis Excellency the Earl of Onslow, the Countess of Onslow, and Admiral Lord and Lady Charles Scott. There were other events for the men of the squadron, including an obstacle race, won by the crew of H.M.S. Rapid. The fifth annual meeting of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club was held on Saturday. In spite of the disagreeable nor'-wester, the attendance of the public was large, and a capital afternoon's sport was provided. C. E. Richardson (9yds) won the 100 Yards; L. W. Harley (7yds) second, J. M. King (scratch) third. Time, 10 2-ssec. Richardson also carried off the' Long Jump, dealing 20ft; King second (18ft Bin). There was a very large field for the 250 Yards, which feU to N. Gurr (15yds) ; Harley (18yds) second, King (scratch) third. Time, 26 4-ssec. R. Gore won the 120 Yards Hurdles easily in 19seo. A Wellington telegram states that Ross, the athlete, was beaten by Doyle, local inspector of nuisances, on Saturday night in a dumb-bell and Indian club competition. The latter scored seven to Ross' five. Ross had offered £20 to anyone who could beat him. Ross immediately challenged Doyle to another trial on Monday evening, which was accepted.
