DEATH OF PRINCE NAPOLEON.
(Per Pbess Association.) Rome, March 18. Prince Napoleon, who had been in indifferent health for some time past, died to-day. Prince Napoleon-Joseph-Oharles-Paul Bonaparte. Orusin to Napoleon 111, the second son of Jerome Bonaparte, by his second marriage, -was born at Trieste September 9, 1822. In 1845 he obtained permisiion to vUit France, but was compelled to leave on account of intrigues with tbe extreme Democrats. After the revolution of 1818 the Corsicaas elected him a member of the Asiemb'y. in which he became the leader of the extreme Republican party. But his views changed, and, be was appointed Minister to Spain, only to be recalled fjr leaving hie post without authority. In 1853 he was made a Prince, with a srat in tbe Senate. In 1851 he went with the French and. British nrmles to the Crimea, and commanded an infantry division of reserve nt Alma and Inkerman On account of his sudden retirement on the alleged ground of ill-health, he received the sobriquet of •' Plon*plon." He was president of the Universal Exhibition Commission in 1855 and in ISftS was placed at the head of the Ministry in Algiers, but soon retired. In 1859 he roarrii-.d Princess Clotilda, daughter of King Vic' or Kmanuel, by whom he has two tons and one daughter. He commanded the French army of reserve In the Italian campdgn, but was not engaged in an j of the battles. In 13tfl he greatly disgusted a great portion of the army by declining to accept the challenge of the Due d'Aumale for an Attack ia tbe senate on the Orleans family. He was president of the Exhibition Commissioners of 1867, but resigned on being reprimanded by the Bmperor for a spaech ia Corsica. On being restored to favour he urged the Emperor to inaugurate a liberal policy with Parliamentary Government. Prince Napoleon travelled a great deal, visiting the United States. He asked for a command when war broke out with Prussia ia 1870, but was sent on a confidential inisdoa to Italy to uso his influence with his father-in-law. After the fall of the Empire he took up his residence ia England. Hn claimed to be the head of tho family after the death of tho Emperor, but failed to organise a party. He took bis seat iv the Chamber of Deputies ia 1876 as, although defeated at the ceoond ballot, M Rouber'a elecoion was Invalidated, but was defeated the following year, and retired from pirty politics. On the death of the Prince Imperial he was recognised as head of the Bonaparte family, but not without opposition, a eeotion putting forward his son Victor, who bad beeu named as his suoceosor by the Prince Imperial In 1883 Prince Napoleon was arrested for issuing a manifesto in which he pored as champion of the church and denounced the republic, but after a month's detention be was set at liberty. He was included in the Expulsion Law of 1886. and left France.
