THE KAKANUI RELIEF FUND.

We have received the following subscriptions to the Kakanui relief fund : —

the city and suburbs have decided to make a pyrotechnic display in connection with the Kakanui open-air fete next week, that will be both unique and on a scale never before attempted in this part. With that object Mr Sew Hoy has gathered from his compatriots the following sums:— Sew Hoy, £4; Duck Lee, draper, dBl ; Tone Duck, draper, £1 ; Quie Vow, 10s; John A. Tong, 10s; On Lee, storekeeper, 10s; Mcc Wan, storekeeper, 10s; Toong Lee, gardener, 10s; Gow Shee, gardener, ss; Joe How, ss ; Toong Qaong, greengrocer, 5» ; Tang Ying, ss ; Yang Joe, ss ; Chong Sing, ss ; Chow Yee, ss; Lee Mun, ss; Joe Duck and Ah Cheung, ss ; Lou Joe, ss ; Gee Loy, 3s ; Yang Jare, 2s 6d ; Ho Mo, 2s 6d ; Chan Wan, 2s 6d ; Eum Soay, 2s 6d; Lum June, 2s 6d; Shing Mong,2s6d; Yang Hon, 2s 6d; Chui Mo, 2s 63; Tong Wing, 2s 6d; Chow Shing, 2s; Lou Guk, 2s ; Lee Loy, 2s ; Sou Tie, 2s. Miss Georgie Smithson, of the Excelsior Hotel, has kindly offered her services to the Entertainment Committee. There is a prospect of the relief fund receiving some assistance from a reaper and binder contest. The representative of the Massey binder having recently issued a challenge to the Buckeye Harvester Company, Mr Oatway, the representative of the latter company, called on us last evening to say that he intended to accept the challenge if the proceeds are given to the Kak&nui relief fund, the contest to take place between the 15th and 22nd March. A Press Association telegram states : — In order to set at rest all doubts respecting the fate of the steamer Kakanui, the Government have decided to send the Hinemoa to make a further search of all the Islands south of Stewart Island where there is a likelihood of the Kakaßui being found. The Hinemoa will leave on Thursday night, and again visit the Macquarie, Auckland, and Campbell Islands, as well as the Antipodes and Bounty Islands. On her way back the steamer will call at the Chathams to ascertain if anything definite can be gained as to the fate of the barque Assaye. A collection was made for the Kakanui relief fund in the Presbyterian Church, Miifcon, on Sunday, and resulted in the handsome sum of £21 10 a being obtained. The Rev. Mr Cnisholm requests us to state that there will in all likelihood be a few pounds more from Milburn, and that the church treasurer will send the amount soon. The Government are about to institute an inquiry into the loss of the Kakanui. An Invercargill telegram states that at a meeting held there a committee was formed to canvass for subscriptions, limited to ss, towards the Kakanui relief fund. The Garrison Band will give a promenade concert this week, the proceeds to go to the fund.

Assault. — At the Port Chalmers R.M. Court on Tuesday, Thomas Geary was charged on the information of Thomas Hewitt with assaulting him with a stick at Otago Heads on February 13. It appeared that the defendant, who had some leased ground at Otago Heads, agreed with plaintiff to plant the same with teazles, the crop to be equally divided between them ; but after the latter had cut and removed his half, he commenced to cut and take away some on the defendant's part, when a dispute arose. Defendant ordered plaintiff off that part of the ground, but as he refused to leave and had a knife in his hand, he (defendant) picked up a stick and pushed him with it.— The Bench were of opinion that a slight assault had been committed, caused, no doubt, by some misunderstanding between the parties, and fined defendant ss, and costs.
