OWAKE.
January 24.— 0n Thursday last the annual Sabbath school picnic was held ia Mr SaunderV paddook, near the river. Everybody, young and old, was invited to be present, and almost everyone accepted the invitation. Tbe turnout was the largest I have seen in the district. The day was fine until towardi evening, when there was a slight shower of rain. The children enjoyed themselves thoroughly. They had a good many races for prizes presented by the Caledonian Society, Messrs Brown, Dabinett, Young and otherß.
Thunderstorm.— Yesterday, at 5 p.m. , we had a severe thunderstorm accompanied by phenomenal hall. In all my life I never saw anything approaching it. The haiistoneß where I happened to be at the time measured from lin to 3in In length, and about lin to 3iu in diameter. They were of different eliapes— some oblong others round. I fear the deBtruction of crops will be great. One ci op, which was fully shot, and from 4ft to sffc long, was bsaten down. Mr Head's paddock of oats was ruined. It is indeed ft pi'iful sight. A great many windows were smashed, and fru.t irees were stripped of their fruit. As yet I hace not heard of any accidents to life or litnb
