Draughts Items.

Mr J. M. Hutton, of Dunedin, spent come time in Auokland recently, where, acoording to a correspondent, he made matters rather lively In* draughts circles. In two sittings of nine games with Mr Gunthorp, however, he suffered a defeat, the score being, Gunthorp 5, Hutton 2, drawn 2. A tournament for the championship of the Western district of Southland is arranged to commence on the 28th inst., at the Fairfax Hall, and to be continued weekly until finished. The entrance fee is fixed at ss, but we have not yet received particulars of what the prizes are to be, or the number of entries up to date. The tourney is only open to players residing within the Western district. The South Australian Draughts Association matches were brought to" a conclusion on December 23, when the Southwarks lost the opportunity of winning this year's premiership through declining, to play off with the Norwoods, as arranged by the ' association. These clubs stood even, each having won sevea matches and having tied twice. Many were disappointed in the Bouthwarks not turning up to play* off, as the games were to be played out. With the exception of this hitoh, we may say the season has been an interesting one, for though the fight [for supremaoy lay between these two clubs, the play was so even, and each olub so anxious to win the colours, that the final result was (looked forward to with great^interest. The season finishes, however, with many improved players, some 'of our young ones having made extraordinary atrideß, and no doubt when the season of 1891 commence! there will be more enthusiasm than ever. Tha season commenced with five associated olubs, but the North Adelaides soon withdrew owing to the difficulty of getting a team together.
