Scotch Burn Trout.— Glenomaru, 1000; Kuriwao, 1000; Waitati, 2000 ; Waiwera,- 1000; Kaihiku. 1000; Pnkerau, 1000 ; Water of Leith, 3000 ; Mr Mac Gibbon, 1000 ; Waiiuate Society, 2000. Out of a small consignment of brown trout ova sent to St. Rathnns, Mr M'Conochie successfully hatohed and liberated 8000
fry, placing them in the following streams witbou loss :— Lauder. 1000; Beck's creek, 1000; Mannherikfa—upper 5000, lower 1090. I lent Mr M'Conochse nearly a thomand Scotch burn trout, -which were intended for the Dunstan creek, but unfortunately they nearly all aucoamiwd before reaching their destination. So that a season should not be lost, I would recommend thai another can of common trout be sent, provided that a trustworthy person could be found going up that would take charge of them. ... I regret to say Banger Burfc had a misfortune with some of his young fry. He was proceeding to the upper waters of the Matanra with about 15,000 brown trout, the day being very hot and aultry. The train through Borne cause was delayed at Gore, and by the time he reached Athol he estimates he lost about 6000. He has, however, still a few thousands on hand, by which this loss can partly ba made up. I wish to draw your attention to the faot that while I was disabled from an acoident in the Water of Leith, Mr Clifford kindly volunteered to look after the fish at Opoho. For upwards of a fortnight he attended to them regularly every day. I may also state that Mr W. Telford, of Clinton, having kindly placed the old salmon ponds at our disposal with the view of ascertaining whether they could be utilised in any way,! the secretary and I visited them a few days ago. They are situated near the mouth of the Waiwera, and there appears to have been two or three ponds of questionable shapes, but as may be supposed they are sadly out of repair, being partly filled up with weeds and rubblih. It would take a considerable sum to clean them out, and to put all the inlets and outlets in proper working order. There is also about 200 yds of the race or Burning gone, this has been constructed of timber and would require to be so again on account of the rocky nature of the situation. Taking all things into consideration, I would not recommend that any steps be taken in this direction at present.
EANQEB FOB THE APAKIMA
A letter was received from the Southland Acclimatisation Society stating that the Government had granted 30s a week for three months for the payment of a raDger for the Aparima, and asking if the Otago Society would supplement the grant to the extent of 103 a week, providing the Southland Society voted a similar sum. .
It was deoided to accede to the request, and it was stated that Mr J. F. Collins had been appointed.
APPOINTMENT OP RANGERS.
It was decided to recommend the appointment of the following rangers: — Alexander Smaill, John Sanderson, James John Pryor, Tomahawk; Henry John Robertson, Wyndham ; John Sheppard, Lmuder Flat, Becks; Duncan Dundas, Toi Toi.
DEBE SHOOTINO.
The suggested plan of a deer sanotuary, to be created at the request of Mr John Blackwood, of Morven Hills, was approved.
The season for shooting red deer was fixed to extend from the 7th March till the 30th April, and that for fallow deer from the 7th March till the 21st April ; the license fee to be £2. Some routine business of an unimportant description having been transacted, the council adjourned.
