NOTES BY SPRINTER.

Acceptances for the handicap events at the New Zaaland Amateur Athletio Championship meeting close on Saturday, the 31st inst,, as stated above.

The following entries for the Championship meeting were forwarded to Ohristchuroh from Dunedin— viz,, ]00yJs, R. G. Waldie; halfmile, three miles, and one mile, P. J. Ness ; 120 hurdles, long jump, and quarter hurdles, John Taiaroa; the one-mile and tbree-mile walks, A. Bain, jun., and T. Kerr. king, the crack sprinter of Wellington, has sprained hiß ankle, and will not be likely to compete at the Champion meeting. Rather unfortunate for Wellington. It is reported that Malcolm has returned to Wellington, and in all probability will represent the Wellington Olub at the Champion meeting at Auckland. A splendid trial was done on the Carisbrook grounds, on the evening of ~ the 21st inst., in the one-mile walk by A. Bain, jun,, who, judging by the time made, must win in Auckland.

I notice in the Athletio Notes in the Press of laßt- week that "Handicapper" somewhat reeentß certain remarks made by "Viking" in the New Zealand Mail, Wellington, and which I hereby append, leaving my readers to judge for themselves, I may say that I have heard the same opinion as "Viking's" expressed by a good many here. "Viking" says i— " They have also selected Postlethwaite, of South Canterbury, !for the jumping events and 120 yds hurdles, but I am at a lobs to know on what grounds. This gentleman, although a member of their olub, belongs to the South Canterbury distriot, and if ho competes at all should do bo »b representing tbe club in his own distriot. The association should in my opinion immediately nip in the bud any suoh proceeding, whioh looks very much like an attempt to bolster up a club's rather weak team of representatives by the inclusion of the member of another recognised club. lam surprised at a olub of the standing of the Canterbury A.A.O. being guilty of such a rather questionable proceeding, and it is to be hoped Mr Postlethwaita will not allow himself to be made a party to it." — " Handioapper " comments on this :— " I fail to see what it is the association should ' nip in the bud.' Postlethwaite being a member of both the C. A. A, C. and S.C.A.A.O. is at liberty to choose whioh club he will represent, The committee of the S.O.A.A.C. I believe did not even ask him to represent them, and as the O.A.A.C. did, he stated his regret at being unable to go North and tun in their (tbe C, A. A. C.) colours. Postlethwaito, as far as 1 know, has never run at a South Canterbury meeting, an«J passed his school days in Christchurob, where he first made a name for himself as an athlote, It appears to me that the whole pith of ' Viking's ' objections arises from the fact that be ia afraid the W.A.A. could not win the Championship banner if Postlethwaite competed as a member ofthoO.A,A.C."

The last paragraph of tho above referring to the Championship banner wouW have beon much better left out. I cannot for a moment imagine " Handioappar's " objecfc in writing in suoh a manner. The New South Wale 3 athletes ought to have arrived- in Auckland on the 26th inst. They were passengers by the Ta Anau, which left Sydney on the 220 d. The Christohuroh representatives were to leave Lyttelton for Auckland by tho Takapu.na on tho 29th in3t. The Dunedin representatives leave hero on tho 28fch by the Jiotemabana. I learn that H. M. Beeves, tbe well-known

Christchurch amateur, leaves on a visit to Great Britain in about a month's time.

A Ohristchurch telegram states that the following entries have been received from Sydney for the Amateur Athletic Champion meeting : — W. T. M'Pherson, 100 yds, 250 yds, quarter-mile, long jump, putting weight, and quarter-mile hurdles ; A. E. Sefton, 100 yds, 250 yds, quartermile, long jump, and putting weight ; G. Bailey, one and three mile walks ; R. J. White and E. Corner, half-mile, one mile, and three miles.
