SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the board was held on Wednesday, January 7. There were present— the Chief Commissioner (Mr J. Spence), and Messrs Kinross and Denniston. Watt, section 555, Hokonui ; J. G. Donaldson, seotion 15, blook XVIII, Jacobs Elver Hundred; Margaret Munro, section 631, Hokonui ; A. G. Hall, section 601, Hokonui ; P. Clifford, section 46, blook 11, Aparima Hundred ; D. O'Brien, seotion 63, blook 11, Seaward Bush; Hugh Cameron, section 14, blook 111, Otama; Louis Walker, seotion 21, Lintley village. To capitalise: John Crowe, section 343, Taringatura. J. P. Young was reinstated as occupier of seotion 78, block I, Longwood, and was granted permission to transfer his right, he having paid up all arrears of rent. B. Flnoh applied for exemption from residence on sections 7 and 8, blook XXIV, East Gore.— Befused. Alex. M'Donald applied for a grazing right over section 26, blook VI, Waikaka.— Lease of 25 acres granted at Is per acre per annum. Donald Williamson applied for a piece of land opposite sections 2 and 3. blook IV, Nokomai. — The Chief Commissioner stated that the land had been applied for by another person, and it was decided to withdraw the reserve from the land and throw it open on the optional tenure system at an upset of 17s 6d per acre. Thomas Hunter applied for a right-of-way to his ooal area on seotion 17, block VI, Chatton. — Held over for inquiry, an application for protection to a tailrace in the same locality having also been received. Thomas Latham applied to purobase or lease section 7, blook XXVII, East Gore.— Granted at 10s per year. Jane Byrnes applied for an occupation licensa over section 8, blook 11, Woodfleld village.— Granted. The Southland County Council asked to have a piece of land of about an acre and a-half vested In it for river protection -works opposite section 644, Hokonui.— Granted, subjeot to owner's consent being procured and survey sketch furnished. Three applications for a lease of section 61, block I, Wyndham diatriot, were deolined owing to there - bsing timber on the land. A. Guteohlag was granted a lease of part of (he coal reserve on section 18, block I, Waikaks. — Granted at 5a per annum. Quintin M'Kinnon applied for that portion of land on the western side of Lake Te Anau to the north of the South Fiord.— Applicant to be informed that the board would grant him a grazing right or occupation license over 30aores at &\ per year. Hugh M'Kenzie was granted a lease of 31 acres of the township reserve at Beach Bay. lake Wakatipu, at the rate of &\ per annum. On the recommendation of Banger Musien, section 3, block IX, Makarewa, and sections 5, 6, 11, and 12, blook 111, Flint's Bush, were declared forfeited, the residence conditions not having been complied with. M. Pries, junr., applied to purchase section 89, Eyre district on the deferred-payment system.— Government fco'be recommended to open the seotion as unsurveyed land at an upset of 10s per acre. The Chief Commissioner reported that he had arranged a compromise in connection with a dispute as to a coal area on block VI, Waikaka, and recommended that a license over the area be granted to, J. D. Dudley, subject to a right to James M'Kenzie to put iv a drive and take coal on payment of Is per ton. —Agreed to. * James M'Kenzie applied for -Jeave to extend the tramway at his Pukerau coal area.— Granted. F. M. Dawson applied for a grazing right over part of section 29, block VI, Waikaka.-The Chairman said the land over which Mr Dawaon desired a grazing right was a coal reserve, and the board had passed a general resolution to the effect that they would not grant any exclusive grazing rights over such areas, as the result might bia conflict with those holding mining rights. — Held over for a month.
