A SEVERE WINTER.
(Peb Pbess Association.) Lodnon, January 7. The mortality in London owing to the hard winter is 600 above the weekly average. January 9. The winter in England and on the Con- i tinent is the severest experienced for 30 f years. The frost in England has now lasted 46 days. Intense cold is being experienced all over the Continent, but in Southern Europe the weather is especially severe. Numerous cases are reported of persons having been frozen to death. January 10. The shipping industry to Holland, Belgium, and Antwerp has been suspended, as the harbours aie closed by ice. The severity of the winter continues, and / the thermometer in London shows 27deg * of frost. January 12. , The Thames is icebound. There are Bin of f ice on the Serpentine, Januaay 13. A thaw has set in both in England and on the Continent. Vienna, January 10. A heavy snowfall has been experienced throughout Austria, which has had the effect of deranging the whole traffic.
