MEETING OF COUNTY RATEPAYERS AT WAIAREKA.
A meeting of county ratepayers resident in the Waiareka district was held in the Bohoolhouse, Cave Valley, on Wednesday night last week, to oonßider the bye-law recently pa3Bed by the county council with rqgard to the width of tires. The council had resolved that owing to the alleged damage to roads by narrow tires on vehicles the width of tirea be in-
creased, and passed a bye-law accordingly. The residents of Waiareka felt aggrieved, and met to protest against the council's action, . There were about 30 ratepayers present, and Mr B. Jackaon occupied the chair. After disousßing the question the following resolutions were carried :— It was proposed by Mr George Brownlee f B6nr.— -"That the bye-law passed by tha county council re width of tirea ia opposed to the interests of the ratepayers of this district, is uncalled for, and should not have been adopted by the council without ascertaining tha mind of the people." It was proposed by Mr J. S. Anderson, and seconded by Mr D. M'Gregor— " That a \ strong committee be appointed by this mooting I to draw up a petition, and get the signatures of as many ratepayers as possible, asking tha county council to reconsider the matter," The following resolution was moved by Me M'Clea:— "That should tho bye-law ba brought into force, this meeting pledges itself to defend in a court of law the prosecutions brought under it, and instructs the committee to take the necessary steps for that purpose." Mr Brownlee moved — "That on the petition being Bigned it be handed to Mr Isdale, their member, for presentation to the council, with a request to support it to the best of his. ability." The following gentlemen were appointed a oomnnttee : — Messrs Mahoney, Brownlee, Morton, M'Clea Jackson, M'Grpgor, and Anderson, the committee to draw up the petition and have it presented at the next meeting of the council. The young woman Annie Rayuer, alias Smith, who is charged with concealment of birth at Auckland, has been committee! for trial. Dc Giles, R.M., said he was sorry that he was unable to commit some other person to be tried along with the accused.
