LAND BOARD.

1 The weekly meetiug of the Land Board was held in the board's office, Government Buildings, on Wednesday last, when there were present The -. hief Commisaloner (Mr J. P. Maitland), and Messrs J Clark, J. Duncan, W. Dallas, and Thomson.

Catlin.- Mr James SUnfleld applied on behalf of Kooert btanfwid, for license to occupy section 1, township of Catlin. for the purpose of erecting a post office thereon. The applicant stated that he was willing to pay a small rental.— The board declined the request.

Dunedin and Bast TAiEßi—Rnnger Hughan reported on ylllnge allotment, sections 44, 45, and 47, block HI, Dunsdin and Bast Taieri district. tie stated that the sections were very rough and poor, and suggested that they be withdrawn from the village settlement system, and be notified at 15s under the Land Act Amendment Act 1887.— The board decided to recommend the Government accordingly. Bastings.— Mr G. B. Partridge, on behalf of Mr «." £ artrid XK e < wrote asking if the quarter-acre sections at Bastings township could be grouped for lease or .sale, as they would never be taken up as quarteracre allotments ; he also stated th*t |the rabbits on m question are becoming a perfeot nuisance. —The matter was referred to Ranger Hughan for report.

Tuturau.— Tho Tuturau Road Board forwarded a list showing roads on which deferred pavmunt thirds of revenue accruing to them for half year ending 31st December 1887 were to be expended.— The road lines were approved. Glenkbnioh —Mr John M'Farlane, of Tapanui, applied on behalf of Colin M'Donald to purchase his old mill site of seven acres aud three-quarters, being portion of bush raierve in block 11, Glenkenich district. -The matter was referred t> Ranger Hughan for report when in tije district.

Shotover.— Mr B. R Baird arjplied to purchase section 27, block FX, Shotover district, lately held by him under license as a quarry reserve, for the purpose of enabling him to wire net the same with his property adjoining. - The matter was referred te the Lake County Council ro say whether it is necessary to maintain tha seotlon as a quarry reserve. Budle.— The Waitahuna County CounoU wrota with reference to thi quarry reserve section 10, block I, Budle district, stating that the council had no objection to thi section being leased. Applications for the grazing right over the section in question were received from James Fraser, Moonlight ; William Dodd, Dunbaek. — The matter was referred to the chief commissioner to arrange for occupation by James Fraser.

Dunkkld.— Warden Revell reported on certain blocks situated in the township of Dunkeld, and recommended tint blocks XXIX. XXX, XXXIV, XXXV, XXXIX, and XL, applied for by Mr Arbuckle, as agent for Beaumont Prospecting and Water Company, be reserved from sale, and that the ground be declared open for mining purposes. - The application was declined, and it was decided to withhold the blooks referred to from sale.

Kurow.— Ranger Hughan reported on the application of Duncan Sutherland for permission to construct a water race through bhe coal reserve, block Vt, Kurow, and stated that the granting of the said race would in no way interfere wltb mining, while the water was absolutely r-quired by the applicant for domeitio purposes.— The matter was referred to the chief commissioner.

HawKßbury.- The Ranger, reporting on the application of Mr T. Latham to co nplete the purchase of an area of land, being portion of section 63, block V, Hawksbury district, stated that the road had all been permanently laid off and made, so that the land referred to was not required for road or any other publfo purposes, and saw no reason why the agreement should not be narrled out. — The application was then apDroved Applications.— The Banner reported on the application of w. B. Oairns for permission to construct a water raoe through portion of the ooal reserve in block VI, Kurow. He stated that the portion required by the applicant was between the creek and section 6, and that the granting of the race would not in any way interfere with coal mining.— Referred to tho chief commissioner. Ranger Hughan reported on the application of Messrs Stou - and Mondy, who acted on behalf of -W. B. Cairns, David Cairns, and R. A. Oairns, for a coal lease over 50 aores in section 3, block IV, Kurow district. He recommended that the same be refused, as it embraced Mr Wade's lease of five aores, besides his dwelling house, but saw ;no objection to granting Messrs Oairns five or 10 aores within the 50 acres reserved for coal on their amending their application. Consideration of the matter was deferred until the area had been surveyed. Daniel Flynn applied for permission to transfer his deferred rayment section 13, block VI. Budle, to Alfred Whitely — Th» transfer was approved Daniel S. Hanger applied to surrender his perpetual lease, sections 10 and 11, block I, Tiger Hill —The surrender was accepted. Applications as under were received for licenses to raise 'ignite under Coal Mines Aots— Lauoh'an Maclean, flveaores, bluok 111, Ida Burn ; John Nesbitt, three acres of section 3. block IV, Kurow ; James Burnett, three aores of section 3, block IV. Kurow.— The license was ordered to be Issued to Mr Maclean for three ysars, and to date from date of expiry of old license. Consideration of the last two applioationß was deferred for survey. Mr O.Martin applied, on behalf of John Tyson, for two miles of Pomahaka river, between blocks XIV and XV, Pomahaka district, for prospecting purposes.— The license w«s granted over two miles for six months. Mr W. Smith applied, on behalf of J. E. Wade, for permission to amend coal licenses for a p»rt of section 5. block IV, Kurow. — Consideration of the matter was deferred until the survey was received

Hydk.— A petition was received from H. Oowling, T. Gilohrist. and other settlers of Hyde, prayinjr the board to subdivide the whole of Run 205 A and 205F, into areas of about 500 aoreß. and that they be opened for perpetual lease The petitioners agreed th»t if the runs were so opened they » ould take the areas up —The board decided to recommend the Government to give effect to the prayer of the petitioners, as it was believed if the runs were opened as asked, the land would be all taken up. Greknvale. - Ranger Hughan reported on the application by John Perry for bush license over 10 acres on block I, Green vale. He recommended tho same to be granted — The board decided to issufi the license for two years at 4s per acre per year, payable in advance.

Strath-Taibbi —Consideration was given to a letter from High School Board of Governors with reference to Mr John Nolan's section 13 block V. Strath-T*ieri.— Ihe board's resolution of Ootober 29, declining the application of Mr Nolan for section 13, block V, Strath-Talerf. and reducing valuations to £300, was rescinded.
