THE V.R.C. SPRING MEETING. MELBOURNE, October 23.

At Flemington this morning Rich Ruby and Richelieu in company put in a good two-mile gallop, of which the latter had the best. Gatling, who is looking extremely well, swung round the sand track with Ethelbert in even time, and Prince Consort had all the best of Tantallon in a two- i ilb run, which he wound up in 3min 38£ sec. Titan worked with the lastmentioned pair, and compassed a mile and a-half in 2oniu 47^sec. Melos was sent once round the sand track, which he accomplished in 2min 38|sec. Carbine and Megaphone covered a mile and a-half in 2tnin 52|sec, but the son of Musket held his companion safe the whole way. The Queen was restricted to a gallop of a mile and a-quarter, which she left behind in a shade under evens. Muriel, who is going remarkably well, finished once round on the sand in 2min 32|sec. Sir William and Teksum rattled off nine furlongs together in 2min 6sec ; while Gresford and Claremont went on for another furlong, finishing in 2min 29sec. Radoo and Whitefoot spurted over six furlongs in lmiu 203ec. Wilga, Gresford, and Sinecure have been scratched for the Cup. Kean, trainer of Leopold and Cuirassier, has sustained a paralytic strobe. It is difficult to get 14 to 1 about Tantallon for the Cup. At Caulfield this morning Whimbrel ran nine furlongs comfortably in 2min ssec. Benzon accomplished the distance in the same time, but was ridden ont under the whip. Dunkeld and Cuirassier both did good work. October 25. Constquent on a good gallop yesterday morning, Highborn was heavily backed last night for the Melbourne Cup, 1000 to 30, 35, and 40 being taken about him. The betting market in other respects is slack. October 26. The weather for training is boisterous and wintry, but the training tracks remain in perfect order. The Queen is said to be in splendid conditioD, and it is believed she will run well forward in the great spring event. Tke Promised Land and Cobham are scratched for the Melbourne Cup. • October 27. This was a quiet morning at Flemington, the work performed being principally preparatory, for to-morrow. Master Grand ran six furlongs in lmin 22sec, and Oarbine and Megaphone covered four furlongs in 54sec. Prince Consort and Titan travelled a similar distance in the same time. Tantallon had a sharp spurt-., and the Queen was restricted to a long spell of mediuaa work. Melos was sent a few furlongs at tbree-quarter pace, but tbe touts are not at all satisfied with him, as he has done no strong work since he has arrived at Flemington. The Admiral has weakened somewhat for the Derby, 3 to 1 being now laid against him, but 5 to 2is now the best offer about him Gatling, who is looking the pink of condition, shows signs of hardening at 100 to 19 (taken) The Admiral, who is slightly under a cloud is ostensibly backed for the Derby at 5 to 2 Annesley was well supported at 100 to 30, which price is nob now obtainable. £5000 has been taken about Gatling down to 6 to 1, Titan has been nibbled at 7 to 1, and Whimbrel at 10 to 1. Chaldean has received strong support for the Cup at 100 to 6 Tantallon, Enuc, and Loyal Stone have been backed at 100 to 7 ; Vengeance, Muriel, and the Queen at 100 to 5, and Highborn at 100 to 4 The following scratcbings are posted : All engagements — Abacus. The tracks were very fast this morning, and some magnificent gallops were recorded. Singapore travelled two miles in 3 nin 46 *ec, the last six furlongs of the distance occupying lmin 22<ec. Richelieu was sent a mile and a-half, which he got over in 2min 46Nec ; and Correze put a mile and a-quarter behind him in 2min 20sec, Wilga taking half a second loDger t> do the stime distance. Prince Consort badly beat Tantallon over two miles, tho time for the spin being registered at 3min 43£-?ee. Titan, with a big weight up, joinod tbe pair and raced in company with them for a mile and a-half, which he compassed iv 2min 50sec. Melos took 2min 44sec to cover a mile and a-half. Carbine performed a splendid gallop on the sand for one mile and three-quarters, which he succeeded in dispo-ing of in 3min 12sec. Gibraltar, who has been absent from the course for some days past, was worked this morning. At Caulfield this morning Cuirassier beat Whimbrel by eight lengths in a mile and a-half gallop, which Whimbrel executed in 2min 49sec.
