MRS BAEYERTZ'S MISSION.

A DRAMATIC CONCLUSION. (From Ouh Own Cobbespondent.) Auckland, October 6. Mrs Baeyertz's mission had a dramatic finale. At the forenoon service at the Tabernacle yesterday Parson Birch announced that on the previous evening Mrs Baeyertz, the Jewish lady evangelist, had met with an accident at her lodgings by stumbling -over a chair in the dark and injuring her throat. He went to her residence that morning, "and we exercised the prayer of faith and anointed her with oil, and before the prayers were ended she was relieved." At her afternoon address at the City Hall Mrs Baeyertz referred to the accident which had befallen her and the miraculous cure. She said on Sunday morning, as the result of the accident, the glands of her throat were swollen and her throat sore, so that she could with difficulty swallow. Two passages of Scripture came to her mind, directing what should be done in such cases, and she sent for the elders of the church, so that with the prayer of faith and the anointing with oil she might be welL. This was done, and soon after, about 20 minutes to 11 o'clock in the forenoon the pain began to go away, and she was able in due time to swallow as usual. She believed that the mishap which had befallen her was " the final attempt of the enemy of souls to to prevent her from delivering her last message to the people of Auckland." If so, it was a lamentable failure on Satan's part, for the lady never spoke better. In the evening Mrs Baeyertz repeated the incident, but further stated that "she felt her throat a little sore yet " — a statement which somewhat tended to discount the miracle, and rather damped the spirits of some of the faith-healing fraternity. The press reporters were unable to ascertain the names of the elders of the church who exercised the prayers of faith and did the anointing with oil, owing to the extreme reticence observed. All that is publicly known as to the operations is simply what was disclosed in the statement made at the forenoon service at tne Tabernacle. At the meeting the Auckland Ministers' Association to-day, Pastor Birch moved a resolution to the effect that the association give her a commendatory letter for use in her work in America. The " glandular swelling episode " apparently stuck in the throats of some of the members, and they were equally hazy as to the identity of the elders of the church who were in the oil business, for after discussion the motion was withdrawn. The respected chairman of the association (Rev. J. Chew), who is well known in America, said he would vacate the chair if the motion were passed, and leave it to some other chairman to sign the letter, quietly remarking in regard to the latest " fad " : " When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, and thought as a child ; but when I became a man, I put away childish things." Mrs Baeyertz left to-day for San Francisco. The net proceeds of the mission after paying expenses, it is said, were over £100, and were handed to her on leaving.
