ISLA BANK (SOUTHLAND) .

August 15.— The » tether it »U that oould be detired. It rained all day on the 2id. tud as a result the ground was subsequently in capital condition for ploughing. A start hie been made with sowing, but it will not be general for some weeks yet. Stock of all kinds are thriving well, food being plentiful— indeed there are mare turnips than the requirements of the district call for, and a small quantity will possibly be wasted for want ofj stock to consume them. The season has been favourable for lambs, but they are only to be teen on a few farm? so far. 0.M.1 —Thfl Calcium Mutual Improvement Society hf»a been meeting during tbe last few months, aud has passed a few evenings with pleasure and pro&t in dlsousiing suoh questions as " Would federation be benenolal to New Zealand?" "Is horse racing desirable sport?" "Is Home Bule advisable for Ireland ? " the last question is to be discussed at the next meeting. The meeting* maybe regarded as a suocess this season. Wallace County Council.— The county counoil is not sailing in smooth water. After being opposed by the ratepayers in many of their proposals, some of whioh haye fallen through,, the members are now striving among themselves. It is to be hoped that good results may follow thit wrangling in a few months, by men being returned having the confidence ot the ratepayers. The latest move Is their having a fling at the late road board, but the ratepayers can truthfully say the road board did better for their interest than the council has done so far. Nothing like so muoh money was mis-spent by the defunoc body as by the council. School.— The Limestone Plains school Is not in a satisfactory condition, there being a combination of circumstances agaimt it. In the first place a school was opened too near, taking away some of the pupils of the old one, then sickness appeared in the neighbourhood, keeping away others, and finally some families left the district. This is very unfortunate, but I suppose we cannothelp it.
