COAL FAMINE AT NELSON.
Nelson, Augus 8,
At a public meeting to-night a trades and labour union on the lines of that at Westport was formed. Uneasiness is felt here at the prospect of a coal famine. There is barely sufficient coal in the place to keep the local steamers going, and several establishments where steam power is used are' already obliged to fall back on wood. The floods at Collingwood last Sunday carried away a bridge on the line from the coal mine there to the port, and 10 days must elapse before more coal can be got from there.
