There was a much better demand for local and country trade, butchers being in large attendance, and taking all yarded at prices slightly over last week's rates, but still considerably lower than they ought to be at this season of the year. There can be no denying the fact that the heavy shipments of dead beef whioh during the last few weeks have arrived here from Wellington has a great deal to do with the low and unprofitable price fat cattle are bringing. These well-known brands were briskly competed for and sold at top rates. Buyers of freezers were again consplouous by their absence, probably because the Burnslde works are to be closed for a short time for periodical repairing. Hides. -A fair demand continues to be experienced ; hut, as regards prices, there are no indications of any upward movement. The local mirk«-t is over-supplied with light hides; while the number of heavy weights coming forward is barely sufficient for trade purposes. All, however, are saleable, but at unsatisfactory prices. We quote heavy weights, 2Jd to 3d ; medium. 2d to 2£d ; light, ljd to If d ; inferior, Id to l£d per lb. (JrHin.— WHeat : There is no material alteration to note in the position of the market during the past week. A few line* are being plnced on the basis of late currmit rates, but buyers generally do notovince any very great desire to further increase stock* to any extent, and the quantity required for looal consumption is limited. Shipper are not operating to any extent, although we believe a slight conoes»ion would lead to more business, more especially in stout, bright lines, these being in most request. Grass Seeds. -The dema-.d for ryegrass seed is increasing, and the market before 1-ing likely to be very bare, so thut to all appearances prioes will be higher. There is no stock of local-grown iv store of any consequence; and although a few consignments from Home are expeoted, the quantity will be limited. We quote best machine-dressed, 5s 6d to 5s 9d; medium, 5s to 6s 3d.
