CASUALTIES.

A man named John Reid wag admitted into the hospital on Sunday. On the previous day he was erectiug a threshing machine at Berwick, when by some means or other he was struck on the right leg with a pole, the result being that the limb was fractured just above the ankle.

A youth named George Crosby, while proceeding along Rattray street on Tuesday morning passed too close behind a horse which was ' being riddtn along the street, when the horse struck out, kicking him on the face with such force as to break his jaw.

The lad was taken to the hospital where he was attended to by Dr Roberts, who found that his upper jaw was fractured. Auckland, August 11. A shocking fatality occurred at Whakatane last night, when Mr Charles Gould was accidentally shot dead noar his homestead, Oporiau station. He was getting through a wire fence, pulling a loaded gun after him, when the trigger caught in the fence and the gun exploded, the ballet going through deceased's heart and causing instantaneous dentn. Mr Gould bad just purchased tho station from Dr Campbell, of Auckland, for £51,000, and a fortnight ago left Tanranga to tako possession. He came from Napier shortly bsfore his wife and family of six young children. He took a place in Tauranga for his family pending permanent arrangements, and proceeded to the estate. For several years the deceased gentleman occupied land at Waitoa, His father oame to Canterbury in the early days of the colony and entered into business in Christchurch, where he was very successful. One of the sons, Mr Joseph Gould, is still in Christchurch, a member of the firm of Gould and Beaumont.

A man named Walton is missing from Woodville (Hawkb'a Bay). The horse he had been riding was found in the gorge, and the police searched the river without finding any trace of him. A search party is being organised.
