agst Sainfoin, 100 to 7 each Le Nord and Rathbeal, 50 to 1 Golden Gate and Kirkham, and 100 to 1 Orwell and Martagon, Places : Bto 1 on Surefoot, 2 to 1 Sainfoin, 5 to 4 Le Nord, 5 to 4 agst Bathbeal, 4 to 1 Golden Gate, 9 to 2 Kirkham, 5 to 1 Orwell, 100 to 15 Martagon, The flag fell at the first attempt to an excellent start. Rathbeal jnmped off with the lead, pursued by Orwell, who was in advance of Kirkham and Sainfoin, while Golden Gate came next, with Surefoot and Ls Nord whipping in. When they had covered a quarter of a mile Kirkbam drew ont, attended by Orwell and Golden Gate, with Sainfoin next, in front of Surefoot, who was succeeded by Le Nord, the rear now being brought up by Martagon. Before another furlong had been travelled Orwell {passed Kirkham, who was followed by Sainfoin and Golden Gate, the next pair being Surefoot and Le Nord, At the mile post Le Nord was pulled back behind Martagon, and Orwell was now holding a clear lead, with Golden Gate second, Sainfoin third, and Rathbeal fourth, while next oame Surefoot. At the top of the hill six furlongs from home, Golden Gate and Sainfoin drew up to Orwell, and the trio oame on in front of Rathbeal and Kirkbam, with Surefcot in pursuit, and Le Nord last. Immediately afterwards Sanfoin shot out, attended by Orwell [and Golden Gate, who were in front of Surefoot and Rathbeal, and so they reaohed the bend. Here Sainfoin on the lower ground and Orwell on the right were in advanoe .of Rathbeal and Martagon, with Surefoot next, and Kirkham now in the rear. Thus they ran into the straight, and a quarter of a mile from home Surefoot seemed in trouble. Orwell simultaneously took the lead, attended by Sainfoin, the next group consisting of Martagon, Rathbeal, and Surefoot, while Le Nord was now drawing up on the outside. At the distance Surefoot was done with, and Sainfoin, drawing out, looked like winning easily, but Lo Nord coming with a rush, a most exciting contest ensued, whioh resulted in favour of Sainfoin by three-parts of a length : a neck divided seoond and third, a head divided Orwell from Surefoot, who was placed fourth by the judge, Martagon was fifth, Rathbeal sixth, with Golden Gato, tailed off, last. It should be added that Surefoot ran very ungenerously and showed a lot of temper. He tried to savage several of his opponents in the first half-mile, and coming down the hill almost overpowered Liddiard in his efforts to seize Robinson, who was riding Rathbeal, Time, as taken by Benson's chronograph, 2min 49 4-sseo.
