WAIKAKA VALLEY.

July 22.— The weather continues fine, but tbe> mornings are frosty. Ploughing was not delayed, however, till this morning. Feed is plentiful, and stock are in good condition. Hoad Matters— A meeting convened by four ratepayers is advertised to take place at the Ohatton sohoolhouse this afternoon, to consider the bye-law of the county couucil regulating loads. Suiue say that the timeand place is unsuitable, being the day on which the usual fortnightly sale of sheep take* place at Gore. The place of meeting is central, bub if ft monster meeting is desired— and nothing elae will have any effect on the council, as they have ignored the request of the road board and Farmers' Club— Gore would probably suit the majority better. Many ratepayers are indignant at the member for tho riding for being a party to makiug such a ridiculous restriction as the council has made* re loads, and there is some talk of withdraw inn tbo eupporfr hitherto accorded to him. A new election take* place,, in November. The member Mr Mao Gibbon. appears to have discharged his duties faithfully and wall during the number of years he has served but the ranj.-rity of the ratepayers in this riding will not, I believe, support anyone who will not do his best to alter the bye-law in the direction of allowing loads of nearly a ton and a-half on two wheels when the roads are dry. There are few farmers In this district who have leas than a fortnight's carting of oats, aud many have a month of this work ; consequently the present restriction will mean a loss of from JB3 to £6 in the season to farmers. And this estimate does not include the. loss in cartiug coal, which is also limited. Clearly it would be better to pay a special rate occasionally If the council cannot keep in repair the roads they have out of the present |d rate.
