July 19. — An entertainment and gift distribution in aid of the funds of the Palmerston High School pook place recently and proved a great success, £40 odd belnglthe Amount raised. A very long programme was gone through, and the dance wbion followed waa Well attended, acid for a few hours the votariei enjoyed themselves. The musio was supplied by Messrs Oswald (violins), Walker (flute), Appleby (coruet), and Clark (piano). Mr K. O'Nell aec-d as M.O.

Muir and C Gil leepie were elected secretary and treasurer respectively. Fabmers 1 Olub —The farmers' club has apparently died a natural ;Irath, aa no meetings have tikcnplaoe for n long time|past. Apparently the ploughing match is to bo allowed to P'ibs again. It is a long time eince we had one now, and as there are some professional ploughmen in the diitrict it is a pity to see «uch backsliding. The best remedy is for all the iiifferent societies, clubs, and committees to amalgamate, and then success would be assured. ' Palmkrston Literary Society.— The first meeting of the session took place in the Town Hall on Monday evening last. The hall was crowded to excess. Instrumental aud vocal muiic was well rendered, and reflects great credit on the various performers. The Rev. J. Clark delivered a most interesting lecture on " Some Aspects of Social Life in Enslnnd and Scotland during the Present Century." At tbe next meeting the Rev. Dr Stuart is to deliver a lecture on " My Trip to the Home Country."
Social Entertainment. - The proprietress of the Alexandra Hotol gave a supper and ball to hnr patrons and the surrounding neighbours on the lUh, und everything passed off moat sucoennfully. Dancing was indulge 1 in ii!l early morn, and a fair number of songs were rendered by lady aud gentlemen vocalists who were present. Hkalt-h Notes.— During the.'past few weeka, and even now, there is an unusual amount of sickness In tho district. Apparently influenza is not gone yet, as many are without doubt suffering from ifc.'and bad oolds, headaches, aud general sickness are al»o prevalent. The only way to account for this iB the very chaugeab!-) weather we are having at present.

JULY 17.— Afc thefortnightlymeefcingof thePalmerston Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., held on the evening of tho 15th lust , the members of this body discusst d the part of tho report relating to friendly societies, lately presented to Government by Dr Macgmgor, inspector of asylums. Some very warm remarks were passed on that gentleman during the evening,
In the end the following resolution was passed i— " That this lodge strongly resents the insult thrown at all friendly societies by Dr Macgregor, that his statements are wholly untrue, and that all friendly societies take steps to compel him to retract that part of the report and make a publio apology."
