The following are the battery returns for the past vreek :— United Alpine, 2190z amalgam from 150 tons ; Golden Treasure, 4820z amalgam Jfrom 105 tons ; No. 2 Dark, 970z 13dwfc retorted gold from 65 tons ; Inkermnn, 1520z amalgam from 80 tons ; Progress, 170oz amalgam (15 heads) ; Globe, 3270z amalgam from 190 tone. Attention having been long called to the enormous loss of gold resulting from the running to waste of tailings from many of the quartz batteries, a proposal Is now before the directori of the leading companies, on behalf of a strong outside syndicate.'to erect extensive works in Heefton tor the proper treatment of pyrites. The companies are 'asked to guarantee to the syndicate all pyrites obtained for a period of two years, the companies receiving 60 per cent, gross of all gold obtained. The proposal is now under consideration.

Four or five months ago Captain Parker, representative of Bnglieh capitalists, visited Reefton in connection with other we»t coast centres in quest of alluvial mining properties. He opened negotiations with the private owner of Boatman's Flat to acquire the laad, and after prospecting the ground agreed upon terms of purchase. These, however, had to await ratification in London. Yesterday the owner of the laud received a letter from Captain Parker laying the syndicate accepted his terms, subject to certain prospecting tests, whioh are to be made at once. As the ground is undoubtedly payable, the venture is as good as cloied. The purchasers purpose erecting extensive plant.
