This splendid animal was iinporloii direct from Germany by Mr John Burns, nnd beiug of a class and build entirely new to this country he attracted great attention. His beautiful colour, his splendid style, and powerfully built frame, combined as they were with all the qualities which are necessary for the breeding of high-class carriage horses, were the universal admiration of everyone, and many wero the regrets expressed by Otago breeders when it was known that he was bought by Mr F. Simmons for Timaru. It will be interesting to admirers of Orpheus to know that as a harness horse he is a complete success, as will be seen from the following paragraph clipped from a Timaru paper ;<-" We had an opportunity

on Saturday of seeing the now famed stud horse Orpheus, the property of Mr F. Simmons, of Compstall, between the shafts of a dog- cart. Orpheus, so far as his owner is aware, was not speoially broken to harness, yet on being first put to the trap he took to his work as kindly as could be wished. In fact he could easily be driven by a lady. Orpheus looked handsome in leather, and the many patrons of him last season will be highly gratified to learn that not the slightest sign of bad temper is seen iv him. In this respect he also meets with support from authorities on horse-breeding, who regard good temper as a most desirable thing."
