A SUCCESSFUL SALE AT TIMARU. Timaru, July 18.
Mr J H. Baker, Commissioner of Crown Lands, conducted a sale of pastoral leases this morning, submitting (1) in 11 lots an education reserve on the Hakateramea, the total being 3764 acres; (2) eight small grazing runs in the same locality, the total area being 20,600 acres; and (3) portions of Station Peak and Waimate runs, total 32,050 acres, in four lots, for seven and a-half months only. The education reserve, an endowment of Canterbury College, was first disposed of. The leases are for 21 years, but the land is subject to purchase at any time at £2 per acre. The following are the lots and names of buyers :—
Section F, containing 14 acres, at an upsec or 14s was passed. Before proceeding with the sale of leases of the small grazing runs, 21 years' term— the first! sale of this kind in Canterbury— Mr Baker explained some of the statutory provisions, especially those bearing upon the prevention of dummyism, stating that the land board would take every care to see those provisions were carried out, and concluding with the advice that anyone who thought of taking up one of these runs without intending to occupy it for his own bonefit had better let it alone. were sold at the upsets to the present occupiers, Mr Cameron and Mr Begg respectively. Mr Baker twice during the sale of small grazing runs, when the bidding was at its keenest, paused and warned the bidders to be careful what they were doing. CROWN LANDS SALE. A sale of Crown lands was held at the Land Board Office on the 17th by Mr Ohalmer, the board's auctioneer.
