HENLEY.

July 15. — A concert and danoe took place in tbe Henley Public Hall on the Bth inst., the proceeds of whioh were devoted to the fund in aid of the widow and children of the late David Gray, who was acoidently killed at Henley some time ago. Mr A. M'Duff ocoupied the ohair, and briefly explained the purpose of the gathering in a few remarks. Tbe following ladles and gentlemen gave songs : — Misses Oralgie (2), Morrison (of Dunedin), Messrs Patterson and Ferguson (Dunedin) ; reading (enmic), Mr Moore, Berwijk; recitation, Mr D. M Kenzie. The great attraction of the evening w.*s the danoing of the Messrs M Kechnie, nnd the bagpipe playing of Pipe-major Mncdonald, all of Dunedin. Tho brothers M' Kechnie danced the double Highland fling and Athole broadsword. Then each performed an Iriih jig nnd the Bailor's hornpipe lii all these they were really capital, while Pipe-mnjor Macdonald shared equally in the hearty all-round applause which they received^ The Chairman, on behalf of the committee, returned thanks ' for tho support given their efforts, and hearty votes of thanks were accorded both those from Dunedin and those in the district who had assisted in any way. The proceedings at this stage closed by singing " Auld Lang Byne," The floor was then cleared, and

danoing was commenced and kept up till about 4 a.m. , Excellent musics was provided by Messrs Oheyne and Henderson (violins), Miss Morrison (pianoforte), and Maodonald (bagpipes). Mr W. Henderson acted as M.O. The proceeds amounted to about£l3,but this sum would have been much greater had the roads been in any way favourable. Needless toisay they [hare been in a d readful state for some time. The committee of tbe Gray fund purpose holding a similar concert at Berwiok during the month, and have secures the services of Pipe-major Maodonald and Messrs M'Kechnle for that oooasion, bo that oar neighbour! on the other side of the plain have a treat in store for them. Hbinvigobated.— Mr M'Kegg, the genial host of the White House Hotel, Henley 1 , has just returned from his trip to Australia in much better health than when he left. He speak* in glowing terms of the cities of Sydney and Melbourne and their growth since last he saw them, some 30 years ago. School Matters. —There is some friction in sohool matters at present between the board and the o6mmittee with reference to shifting the preienfc i sohool to Henley. What the upshot 1 may be I am not prepared, to, say. However, I understand tbat a deputation will.wait on theboard at Its next meeting, when I have no doubt they will state their case fairly, and will be fairly treated by that body. Mr Goyen paid the sohoola surprise visit some time ago, and expressed himself well pleased with its manage* ment.

Debating Club.— Our debating club held a meeting last week, but it seems to lack spirit this year— a fact whioh may be attributed to the oouater attractions of skating and danoing held in the public ball during the week.
