j July 11:— Notwithstanding the misty rain whioh fell all day on Thursday, there was a very fair gathering at the Tuapeka West ■ ploughing' matoh, quite & number of visitors from Lawrence and elsewhere puttinginanappearanoe. Somecapital work was done on the field by the different competitors. Iq.theevening av ery 1 large number attended the dinner, which was V.id in the dining room of Bulflna's Hotel, and the host obtained great kudns for'Hhe choice, and simple spread proviued.'to whioh full justice,. was done. After the inner man was duly satisfied, speeches, songs. &0., were tbe order of the night, and a^ery jovial Evening was spent. ' In order to provide for the younger members -ot 'both sexes one'of the' settlen g.we a dance, whioh was thoroughly enjoyed by those in attendance. > t - :' Accident.— Mr Alex. ,M{akeH, a very old carrier on the roads, met with' an unfortunate accident on the Dunstan Flat last week. He fell off hisTvagKo'n and was badly hurt. He was removed to the residence of a settler in the vicinity; and 1b progressing as favourably as can be expected.
