ROADS IN THE NORTH ISLAND.
The Minister for Lands informs me that the plans and specifications for the, bridge over the Tongariro or Waikato river near Tokaanu are ready, and will be advertised this week. The Government hope to have the road between Auckland and Wellington, via Taupo, open for wheel traffic this summer, and 'preparations are being made to erect the bridge at once, as it will take longer to complete than the road. Some 66 miles of this road round the south of Lake Taupo to Lake Rotorua were made by the Armed Constabulary years since, but have been rendered useless by the difficulty in crossing the Tongariro river. This is the only dangerous unbridged river between Liohfield and Hunterville, and two or three lives have been lost in attempts to cross it.
