The directors of the Union Bank of Australia have declared a dividend of 15 per cent., and carry forward £15,000. The Argentine financial crisis is becoming more acute. The National Bank will have to go into liquidation unless it receives assistance. The Government are considering the suspen sion of payment cf bank notes. Gold is at a premium of 215. The Liberal minority have withdrawn from the Procedure Committee, and owing to their hostility the Government may refrain from attempting to carry the new Standing Orders. The situation has become confused, and it is not known whether the Government will abandon principal bills and rise early, commencing next session before Christmas, or whether they will have an autumn session. ~ A great ring is being formed of British chemical manufacturers. The Chinese authorities threaten to exclude Americans from China unless the embargo on Chinese landing in the United States is removed. Cholera has made its appearance in China. Mr E, Parke, editor of the North London
Press, was released from prison on aocount of ill-health.
It is now asserted that the Grenadiers mistook the hour for the parade, and that it was not their intention to mutiny. The Duke of Cambridge and Colonel Wolseley conferred with Colonel Maitland, but the result of their deliberations was not made known.
The Western Australian Enabling Bill has been read a first time in the House of Lords., The inhabitants of Heligoland, to be ceded to Germany, will have the option of remaining under the British nationality. A poll of the shareholders in Allsopp's Brewery Company upon the proposal that the vendors should guarantee a dividend for three years resulted in the proposition being negatived by a large majority The Assets Company, after dividing the stocks of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, propose to reduce the capital by £100,000. Moran, alias Egan, accused of bigamy, has been discharged, as no proof of his identity could be obtained. July 9. The Grenadiers who were confined to their barracks in consequence of the alleged mutiny have been released. Constantinople, July 8. The Porte demands the evacuation of Egypt by England, but granting her limited right to occupy in the event of internal danger. Washington, July 9. It is considered likely that Congress will agree to the compromise arranged by the Silver Conference, though the Democratic party are very angry that free coinage was not enacted. The arrangement is to come into force 30 days after passing Congress. Intense heat, continues throughout the United States, and many additional cases of sunstroke are recorded.
