THE FINANCIAL DEBATE.
The arrangement come to last night for the Budget debate to close to-day has fallen through, it being found impossible to carry it out, so many members insisting on speaking. To-day's speakers were Dr Fitohett, Messrs Goldie, Fisher, Scobie Mackenzie (who made a capital speech — one of his happiest efforts— in which he hit Mr Fisher very hard), John M'Kenzie, and Withy. There was some talk of a division being taken directly after Mr Withy sat down, and then it was rumoured that the Opposition intended to oppose any further adjournment of the debate and would stonewall if an adjournment were attempted. A mild attempt at resistance was made when Mr R. Thompson moved the adjournment ; but though a division was called for it was not insisted on when the doors were looked, and the debate was adjonrned till 2.30 p.m. tomorrow.
It is improbable that the debate will close before Friday. Sir J. Hall, Messrs Bruce, Menteatb, Newman, Macarthur, and Seddon all intend to make long speeches to-morrow.
