EXPORT OF BUTTER.
The following letter was received at Monday's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, and will be considered at the next ordinary meeting : —
Noticing that a meeting is called for to-day to discuss the question of primage duty it occurs to me to request you to bring before your chamber at the same time the question of Inspecting and branding butter ere shipment to other markets as it is now before the Assembly. In doing so, just allow me to •ay that It is done by other countries who send similar produce to the same markets as we do. 2 he disadvantage to ours in competing bo far is most disheartening to makers and exporters. Morel need not say, and you know, and fellow members kuow, 1 have always urged its being done long before we had any to export— namely, since the first meeting re freezing mutton for export. Another matter that I think should be Eeen lo is the condition and temperature of the cool chambers on the Home steamers, as I fear, from the reports ol the condition of some shipments of dairy produce when landed there, those people do not realise the importance of its being perfect.
