Derbyshire only made 54 in their first innings, and the Australians had lost six wickets for 30 runs. The wicket was sticky and difficult. Turner got six wickets for 16 runs, and Ferris four for 30. The Australians in their second innings lost nine wickets for 75 runs, when the innings had to be declared closed in consequence of the rain. Jones played a very good not-out innings for 2*9. Spofforfch secured six wickets for 42 runs. July 3. The cricket match Australia v. Derbyshire was drawn. The Stoke match is against an eleven of England, and not against Staffordshire as at first arranged. The home team includes Flowers, Daft, Sbaoklock, Abel, and Sharp. The Australians made 60 in their first innings. Barrett stonewalled for 14, Gregory made 11, and Trumble 11. The wioket was sticky, and good batting was out of the question. The attendence was only moderate. The Englishmen lost eight wickets for 55 runs. Murdoch is taking a rest, having strained his back slightly. The statement that Woods, captain of the Cambridge eleven, is to assist the Australians during the remainder of the tour is denied. July 4. The first innings of the English team of players in their match at Stoke against the Australian Eleven closed for 60 runs. The Australians in their second innings have lost three wickets for 81. In the first innings of the Englishmen Turner took two wickets for 26 runs, Ferris seven for 16, and Trumble one for 11. The Australians in their second innings knocked up 139. Lyons scored 20, Trott 14, Barrett 40, Gregory 23, Trumble 12. The Englishmen began their second innings requiring 140 runs to win, but were all disposed of for the poor total of 51, leaving the visitors victorious by 88 runs. The wicket was all in favour of the trundlers, and none of the local men reached double figures, though Mr Wright, the Notts amateur, batted throughout the innings for the small score of 7 runs. Eleven extras were scored against the Australians. Turner took seven wickets for 23 runs, and Ferris three for 17. July 7. The Australians are playing to-day against Leicester. At the luncheon adjournment Leicester, who went in first, had scored 92 runs for the loss of one wicket. ' Leicestershire are all out for 166 runs. The principal scorers were :—J. Turner, 46 ; Waren, 45 ; Wright, 28. The batting of the remainder of the team was weak. Ferris took one wicket for 31 runs ; Turner, six for 51; Trott, three for 31. Play had to be stopped owing to rain. Murdoch and Walters are not playing in this match. The Australian cricketers have received substantial guarantee for seven weeks in South Africa, but as Turner and Ferris are unable to go, it is doubtful whether the guarantee will hold good. Nothing is yet definitely settled.
In the cricket match against Leicestershire, the Australians have one wicket for seven runs.
