MOSGIEL.

Junk 30.— The usual fortnightly m ettng of tho Literary and Debating Society was held on Friday, the 20th. There war a large attendance oi members, I and in the abßeuoe of the president Mr G. Hioks occupied tho chair. After the meeting had been opened by Mr J. C. Hodges, who offered up a short prayer, Mr R. Allan sang a song of a martial character in a very creditable manner. The syllabus showed that tho business for the evening was a dieciiMion on several items in the society's journal, anri <i very enjoyable meeting rewarded those who attend"d, A prormaal to amalgamate the various societies of this kind, which had been read at a previous meeting, called forth some little discussion, but it was generail^ agreed upon that such a thing would be of no profit to the societies as literary and debuting societies exist by tho good Influence they unread for themsolves and not by the help they wail ! be able toobVii-i from others. Some quenlious which were snnt in to bi answered called out the latent energy of s>ine of the members, especially one— viz., " Doeo football elev-tle t.ht> mind of the player? " The discussion urew so warm on this subject that if. tiad to be dropped. A well-written and interesting descriptive ace-mnt of a " Trip to Lake Wakatipu," by two tourists, was also givi-n to the society, ami was very well received. Tho meeting was closed b/ Mr Hurty s pronouncing the benediction.
