Notes from Wakatipu.
(Fbom Our Uwn Correspondent.) Arrow, June 30.—Frost is beginning to assert itself, and for the next month or six weeks will have it pretty muoh all its own way. Still every sitting of the Warden's Court discloses a fair, if not large, list of applications for mining privileges, arguiug that the Industry is in a healthy state. Tne last sitting of the court was no exception to the rule. The Gallant Tip washed up last Monday, the frost at last getting too much for the battery. The cake weighed 28l£oz, obtained from 560 tons of quartz. The returns from this mine show that a moderate average, regularly maintained, is after all more permanent, reliable, and profitable than brilliant or phenomenal orushings. A meeting of directors will be held to-night, and it is expected that a handsome dividend will be declared, as there is no liability ou the aompauy. Without exception this mine has been the most regular In its output in this district, a fact which speaks well for the management. Mr Sew Hoy, who has a personal kuowledge of his dredging claim at Big Beach, Shotover, having worke.i upon it iv the early days, is at present upon the ground directing further prospecting operations It is reported that good prospects are being obtained, and that gold of a lumpy nature has been met with. The new dredge is oomiug on well, and will be at work in a few weeks. Mr Sew Hoy has aleo been successful ab the Oardrona, where under his supervision and direction a paddock was sunk, from which very good gold was obtained, the result being 7dwt of gold. The ground apparently presents no difficulty to dredging. Dredging continues to monopolise the looal mining attention, to which recent developments have added quite a zest. A quarter share in the Golden Drift dredging olaim, Maori Point, Upper Shotover, fetched by auction £50, bhe purchaser (Mr M. O'Meara) being offered £76 immediately afterwards, but he declined the offer. Tbe Premier Oomptny is about to make a fresh start under the new company. A first Instalment of the needful to set things agoing has arrived, and at ooon m the luoal djreotora (i.e., thoie in Otago) can
meet a line of aotion will be decided upon. It is, however, understood that the plaus of works prepared by Mr L. O. Heal, jun., will be adopted and followed, so that there is not likely to be any delay in tho direotors arriving at some definite conclusion. Mr John Eliot, the present manager, will continue in charge. The company could probably not have done better in the selection of a manager, as duiing his long connection with the mine he has proved himself both effioleut and successful in his operations.
