LAND BOARD.
The weekly meeting of the Land Board held on Wednesday was attended by Mr J. P. Maitland (chief commissioner), W. Dallas, H. Clark, J. W. Thomson, and Duncan.
Htjmmooksidk.— Mr John Hallam appeared before the board to give reasons for his non-resideace on his small-grazing run in Hummockside. He stated that he resided on his freehold farm in the Hawksbury district, and was within 10 miles of the run. — The board considered this reason for non-resi-dence satisfactory under the aot, and agreed to allow Mr Hailam exemption from residence on the areti in question. Forfeited Licenses.— lt was agreed to forfeit the licenses of the following persons who had been written to regarding payment of arrears without effect:— Leslie, flax cutting license on block XVIII, Tuapeka Bast; John M'Neil, similar license on block 111, Tuapeka East. Tiger Hill.— Mr Edmund Smith, on behalf of the Presbyterian Church, wrote stating that he had made a mistake in applying for a portion of a section in blook I, Tig<-r Hill. He asked to be allowed to exchange the area for that portion of the section remaining.— Beferred to warden to report whether there was any objection to the sale of the remaining section.
Taibri.— The Engineer of the Taieri County Couuoil forwarded a list of roads upon which deferredpayment and other moneys accruing between February 2, and April 26 were to be expended. The roads are situated in the Mount Hyde, Maungatua, and Dunedln and Bast Taieri districts.—Approved. Kawarau.— Banger M'Kenzie having been written to with respect to the price at which sections 4, 5, 6, and 7. blook 11, Kawarau, Bhould be notified, recommended a capital value of 15s on section 6 and 12s 6d per acre on the other three sections. He forwarded a letter from Mr W. Meanooh stating that he and other miners were working on the ground. — It was agreed to recommend Government to notify aeotions 4, 5, and 7 at 12s 6d per acre ; section 6 not to be dealt with, as miners are working on it. The Warden, Arrowtown, forwarded a report by Banger .M'Kenzie on sections 9 and 10, blook V, Kawarau, stating that they are auriferous and recommending that they be reserved for mining purposes.— lt was resolved to withdraw the section from sale for mining purposes. Waipobi.— Mr S. B. Carpenter, secretary of the Waiporl Miners' Association, wrote making suggestions with regard to the preservation of the Watpori bush. As there was not likely to be a heavy draught on it for fuel for the steam dredge and other dredge* it was suggested that a small frontage be given to each licensee; tbat one person be limited to three acres of culled, or one acre virgin bush ; and that no amalgamation of leases be permitted. — Beferred to Banger Hughan for a report. South Molynbux. —Mr Andrew Duokworth ■wrote asking if be might lease the island next to Mr Button's, on the Koau river.— lt was agreed to decline to lease the island.
Chgmwelli. — Banger M'Kenzie, in reporting on an application for coal-lease of land near Cromwell, stated that after inquiries he saw no objection to the granting of the application, and recommended that it be granted under the usual conditions. — Lease to issue for 21 .years at 5s per acre per annum, with 6d royalty ; subject to survey fees.
Applications.— The following applications were j granted :— For rural land on perpetual lease s George Sloan Paterson, section 8, block V, Dunback ; Joseph Cumine, sections 6, 7, and 8, block VII, and sections 7to 11, block IX, Warepa. To surrender perpetual lease: Boberfc A. Clarke (per Mr W. L. Simpson), section 20, block VII, and section 3, block X, Blackatone. To surrender coal license : William Thomson, five aores, block IX, Leaning Bock. William Thomson's application for renewal of coal license over four aores in block IX, Leaning Rock, was granted for three years, at the former rate. Graham M'Leod'a application for a coal license over 40 acres in blook VII, Naseby, and a similar request by W. Parcell over six aorea in blook I, Bannockburn (Cromwell), were referred to the warden lor report. Ipaburn. — Mr S. B. M'Carthy, for Jane Anderson, asked that surrender of coal lease No. 27, eeotion 1, Idaburn, be accepted, and a new lease issued to her for the area.— The matter was ordered to stand over until the expiry of the existing lease. Kmuwi.o. • Messrs James Chalmers and Robert Chalmers, jun., small grazing run lessees at Kuri■wao, asked if they might work their runs together. — It was agreed that the board had no power to dispense with personal residence of lessees on runs. Swinburn.— The Warden at Naseby, reporting on a petition by Thomas Healeyand Alexander Pearson, stated that their lands— viz., section 3, block IV, and section 6, blook IV, Swinburn— had been considerably injured by the debris from the mining ab >ye being deposited on their lands. The Warden stated that the men were deserving of relief, and suggested that the values of their sections be reduced from 30s to 208 per acre.— Consideration adjourned until the following day.
