The monthly meeting o< the Education Board was held on Thursday. Present— Mestro J. Macgregor (chairman), J. Green, J. W. Jago, J. M'Kenzie M.H.E., M. Praer, H. B.'Appla,by, do, Cambrians, vice Beattie. promoted ; Helen Malcolm, do, Hil!endi vice Wall, promoted. < BENTOGO SCHOOL. i Several householders in the Bendigo school district entered a protest against the, election of a, school committee for that district, , - After hearing the written explanation of Mr John Wright, chairman of the meeting, and considering, letters from some of the.parties objected to, the board agreed to uphold the election. i WAIHEMO AUD WHABK FLAT. It was reported that the householders in the Waihemo and Whare Fiat districts bad failed to eleot school committees. The board agreed to appoint commissioners to act instead— Messrs R. Matheson and P. M'Leod for Walhemo, and Messr» liehbntan 1 , Howard, and Bonaldson for Whare Flab. > . ■ ■ ' PAIHBBSTOWk The Palmerston School Committee wrote enclosing a copy of the following resolution, adopted by , them:— "That the Education Board bo requested to endeavour to prevent the ■ frequent dhange of class books In the schools, and thatthecoramittee respeotfolly suggest that the board In Dunedin confer with the boards of other educational districts with the view of obtaining p uniform set of • reliable books for the whole colony, the oommittee being of opinion that some of the books at present in use in this sohoolare misleading." ' ' • ARTHT/B STKKKT SCHOOL. A deputation consisting O f Messrs E. N. Adams, W. MAdam, and A. Bain (members of the Arthur street School Cctnmif.tee) waited on the board with reference to some affairs in the ichool whioh they wished the board to attend to, ' Mr Adams stated that the ventilators In one of the rooms did not work satisfactorily, as they oxused a draught to come down on the teachers and children. A certain door required glass panels, so as to give light to a dark passage, and a fireplace should be placed in the hesd master's room. Mr James Bonnie, secretary of the Otago Educational Institute, wrote stating that the annual meeting of the instltnte had been fixed for the 20th, 30th, and 31 »t July, and diking the board to issue circulars to sohool committees instructing them to close their schools in that week so that teachers might attend the meeting Mr Dick understood that the sohools closed next week. The Secretary said that a number of schools were going to close at the end of the present month, and already intimation to that effect had been given in at the office. In answer to Mr Green, the Chaikmah stated that last year the institute asked the board to close the schools at the end of June. After further 'discussion it was agreed on the motion of Mr Jago, seconded by Mr Clark — " Tfc^ the secretary be i-'structe<l to forward "a circular to the several school committees intimating the meeting of the institute on the days mentioned in the letter (the 29th, 30th, and 31st July), but leaving the closing or otherwise of the sahools At the discretion of the committepn, and that the secretary of the institute be informerl that the board deem the alteration of the date of holding the institute's meeting an inconvenient and likely to materially interfpre with the convenience and work of the sohools." A letter was received from Mrs Ppiers stating that a piece of needlework which ha 1 ' been made by h«»r daughter in the sohool, and whioh was spntto'tbe exhibition, had been claimed by the mistress ss her property, and had eventually been disposed of by art union.
