CRICKET.
THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS. (Per Pbess Association.) London, June 11.
In consequence of the rain the game between the Australians and Middlesex was abandoned, and will count as a draw. June 12. The match against Notts was commenced to-day. Burn and Jones are not playing. The weather is fine, and the wicket plays fast. The Home captain having won the toss, elected to bat. At the luncheon adjournment Notts had lost one wicket for 51. Light showers fell during the progress of the cricket match, but not heavy enough to injure the wicket. Nottingham has lost four wickets for 159 runs, the principal scorers being Shrewsbury 61, Gunn 43, Barnes (not out) 19, Butler 18.
June 13. In the match played by the Australian cricketers against Notts the latter team scored 215, of which Flowers made 14, Barnes 22, Attewell 18, and Shacklock 16. The Australians in their innings scored 62 runs before the call of time, of which Trott made 13 and Ferris 22. Turner took six wickets for 75 runs, Ferris two for 78, and Lyons two for 25. In the first innings of the Australians five were dismissed without scoring. The second innings of the Australians closed for 127. Lyons scored 16, Trott 27, Turner a dashing 26, Gregory (not out) 21, Walters 21. In the.
first innings Jewell took six wickets for 38, and Shacklock four for 21. In the second innings Jewell took four for 21. The wicket was difficult to bat on. Notts won by an inning 3 and 26 runs. June 16.
The match against the South of England was commenced te-day. The captain (W. G. Grace) of the home team won the toss and elected to bat. At the luncheon adjournment they had lost two wickets for 69 runs.
The South of England scored 163 in their first innings. Grace played a vigorous innings for 47, in which he gave three chances. W. W. Read scored 90 in brilliant style, not giving a chance till he reached 80. Beyond these two the batting was of a feeble character, the rest of the team only making 16 off the bafc between them. Turner obtained three wickets for 50 runs, and Ferris six for 88 runs. Blackham stumped three and caught one,
The Australians at the close of the day had lost seven wickets for 53 runs. Lyons made 12, Murdoch 6, Blackham (not out) 25. Lohmann and Martin were both in capital form with the ball, and the wicket was slow and rather difficult. Jones and Oharlton are not playing. Murdoch had his leg injured while trying to stop a terrific drive by Grace.
The batting averages of the Australian cricketers so far are :— Gregory, 25 ; Trott, 21 ; Murdoch, 19 ; Ferris, 18 ; Lyons, 18 ; Turner, 17; Blackham, 15.
The Daily News says it is evident the tour of the Australian Eleven will hardly be the success that was expected. The team will have no chance against representative English elevens unless saved by Turner, who the News considers is the greatest bowler on a wet wicket that has ever appeared.
